Aberdeen vs Rangers LIVE!

Aberdeen and Rangers meet again in the Scottish Premiership, this time under the floodlights at Pittodrie, with both sides chasing points that could shape the early title race. The stakes are clear: a draw would maintain the gap between the Glasgow giants and the Dons, while a win for either would send a signal to the rest of the division. With the match already into extra time, the tension is palpable, and every pass, tackle, and shot carries added weight. The referee has already pointed to the spot after a VAR review, and the home side converted to force the additional period.

What happened on the pitch

Rangers began brightly, pressing high and testing the Aberdeen backline with quick transitions. The Dons, organised in a compact 4-2-3-1 shape, absorbed the pressure before springing forward on the counter. The deadlock held until the 87th minute, when Rangers broke through with a well-worked goal from Alfredo Morelos, who finished clinically after a cut-back from Ryan Kent. Aberdeen responded within two minutes: a rapid counter-attack ended with Lewis Ferguson drilling home from the edge of the box after a turnover in midfield. The referee pointed to the spot after a VAR review for a foul on Dujon Sterling, and Scott McKenna stepped up to convert, sending Allan McGregor the wrong way. The additional period has seen chances at both ends, with both goalkeepers making crucial saves, but neither side has been able to find a winner.

Why this match matters now

Aberdeen’s start to the season has been steady rather than spectacular, but a point against Rangers—especially after taking the lead—would reinforce their status as credible challengers. For Rangers, a draw would feel like a missed opportunity, given their superior possession (68% in the first half) and territory in most spells. The result could influence momentum in the title race, with both clubs currently within touching distance of Celtic at the summit. A slip-up here might not decide the championship, but it could delay ambitions by weeks. Rangers’ next fixture is a midweek Champions League qualifier, while Aberdeen face a Europa League play-off, making squad rotation a near-certainty regardless of the outcome.

What comes next

The match remains deadlocked after extra time, with no further goals in the additional period. A penalty shootout now looms if neither side can find a winner before the final whistle. For Aberdeen, the priority is to secure at least a draw to preserve their unbeaten home record in the league this season. Rangers, meanwhile, will push for a late strike to claim all three points and tighten their grip on second place. The outcome will shape the next round of fixtures, with both teams likely to rotate squads ahead of midweek European commitments.

The tactical battle has been fascinating. Rangers dominated possession, probing with overlapping full-backs Ryan Kent and Borna Barišić stretching the play, while midfielders John Lundstram and Ryan Jack dictated tempo. Aberdeen, however, remained disciplined, absorbing pressure before launching rapid breaks through the pace of Jamie McGrath and the industry of Ferguson. Their willingness to commit numbers forward in the second half unsettled Rangers’ defensive structure, and the equaliser came from a swift transition after a turnover in midfield, with McGrath exploiting space on the left flank. The Dons’ intensity in extra time suggests they believe a winner is still possible, while Rangers’ fatigue is beginning to show in their decision-making, with Kent and Barišić struggling to recover position.

As the match edges toward its conclusion, the focus shifts to the shootout. Aberdeen’s goalkeeper, Joe Lewis, has been a constant presence in their recent matches, making 12 saves in his last five league games. Rangers’ penalty record this season has been mixed, with Kent missing one and Barišić scoring one in their last two shootouts. The next few minutes could define the narrative for both clubs in the weeks ahead—whether it’s relief, regret, or a springboard to greater challenges.
