Al-Hilal close in on Arsenal’s Martinelli for £50m

Arsenal are on the brink of a £50m-plus exit for Gabriel Martinelli, with Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal closing in on a deal that would bring the Brazil international’s Emirates Stadium career to an abrupt end. The Gunners, fresh from their Premier League title triumph, are preparing to cash in on one of their summer recruits, with the winger’s future now dictated by a move that could reshape both clubs’ financial strategies.

Arteta’s squad overhaul leaves Martinelli surplus to requirements

Martinelli’s omission from Arsenal’s opening-day victory over Coventry on Friday was the clearest signal yet that Mikel Arteta no longer views him as part of his long-term plans. The 25-year-old, who arrived from Ituano in 2019, has 12 months left on his contract but has been frozen out of first-team contention before a single ball has been kicked in the new campaign. His 53 appearances and 11 goals last season—contributions that helped secure the Gunners’ first top-flight title in 20 years—count for little in Arteta’s reshaped squad, where fresh faces like Ezri Konsa have already been prioritised.

The manager’s stance has drawn criticism, with former Arsenal striker Ian Wright questioning the club’s handling of Martinelli’s exit. “The way Martinelli is being treated at the moment, it really makes me feel uncomfortable,” Wright told Sky Sports. “I know they might want him out, and a lot of people might say, ‘yeah, it’s time for him to move him on’. But there’s ways of doing that and it should suit him as well, how he wants to leave.” Arteta, however, has reportedly explained his decision directly to Martinelli, leaving the forward with a stark choice: accept a lucrative move abroad or remain at Arsenal under diminished circumstances.

Al-Hilal’s £50m bid and the lure of Saudi riches

Al-Hilal’s interest in Martinelli is not just financial—it’s structural. The Saudi club’s offer, reported to be worth at least £50m, comes with a wage package that dwarfs his reported £180,000-per-week at Arsenal. The Brazilian has already turned down a move to Galatasaray this summer, but the Saudi Pro League’s financial clout, combined with the chance to play under a new challenge, appears to have shifted the balance. Discussions between the clubs have intensified in the last 24 hours, with a deal now described as “close.”

For Arsenal, the potential windfall would arrive at a pivotal moment. The Gunners have spent heavily this summer, but their summer recruitment drive has been under scrutiny, with questions lingering over the balance between ambition and sustainability. A Martinelli sale would provide immediate funds to reinvest elsewhere, whether in the Premier League or on the continent, or simply to ease the pressure on the club’s wage structure. The timing is opportune, too, with the transfer window still open for another eight days—ample time for Arteta to reshuffle his attacking options.

This isn’t the first time Arsenal have explored Martinelli’s market value. Earlier this year, reports suggested interest from Galatasaray, but the player opted to stay put. Now, with his role at the club in question, the Gunners may finally accept an offer that reflects his standing as one of their most consistent performers in recent seasons. His World Cup heroics—including a dramatic winner for Brazil against Japan in the 2026 tournament—have only burnished his reputation, making him a prized asset in a market hungry for proven talent.

Arsenal’s financial juggling act enters a decisive phase

The Martinelli saga is a microcosm of Arsenal’s broader financial strategy: balance ambition with pragmatism. The club’s summer spending has been aggressive, but the sale of a high-earning player could free up funds to address other areas of the squad. Whether that means targeting a replacement in the final weeks of the window or simply bolstering the club’s balance sheet remains to be seen. What is clear is that Arteta’s squad is in flux, with players like Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, and potentially even Gabriel Jesus facing uncertain futures.

Trossard’s recent move to Beşiktaş—sparked by his frustration at limited game time—underlines the risks of a crowded attack. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s interest in Julian Álvarez, as reported by Sky Sports, suggests they are already planning for life after Martinelli. The Argentine’s potential arrival would add further depth to Arteta’s options, but it would also require careful integration into a squad where minutes are increasingly contested.

The Gunners’ approach mirrors the broader trend in European football, where clubs are leveraging sales to fund new signings or reduce wage bills. For Martinelli, the Al-Hilal move represents a chance to secure his financial future while playing at the highest level outside Europe. For Arsenal, it’s a calculated risk—one that could define their summer transfer narrative.

With the window closing soon, the next 48 hours will be decisive. If Al-Hilal’s offer is accepted, Martinelli’s Arsenal career will end on a sour note, but his next chapter could be one of the most lucrative in his career. For the Gunners, the challenge will be to turn a potential loss into a strategic gain—without repeating the mistakes of past summers.
