All 20 Premier League club’s biggest problems despite record-breaking transfer window

Premier League clubs have just completed the most expensive transfer window in history, splurging more than £3.2bn in a desperate bid to close gaps before the season kicks off. Yet even with record outlays, managers across the division still head into 2024-25 with glaring weaknesses—some inherited, others self-inflicted. Arsenal, tipped to defend their title, are already missing key attacking pieces after failed moves for Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior left them relying on Christos Tzolis as their first-choice left attacker. Manchester City, meanwhile, threw £190m at Enzo Fernández and Iliman Ndiaye on deadline day, but the depth of their squad remains unproven beyond the usual stars. Liverpool’s £123m outlay for Bradley Barcola, a player who arrives with just 12 top-flight goals in 128 appearances, suggests a squad that, for all its quality, still lacks a definitive No. 9.

Arsenal’s title defence starts with a weakened attack

Mikel Arteta’s side came within a whisker of a Premier League and Champions League double, yet the summer’s biggest missed opportunities have left them exposed on the left flank. With Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard no longer at the club, Arsenal are forced to begin the campaign with Tzolis as their primary left attacker—a player who has never started a Premier League game and arrives with just 12 goals in 68 senior appearances. The failure to land Rogers or Vinicius Junior means Arteta’s frontline now lacks the same cutting edge that defined last season’s triumph. While Declan Rice and William Saliba have been shrewd additions, the attack remains a question mark, particularly against the league’s top sides. The Gunners’ inability to secure a left-sided creator—whether through Rogers, Vinicius, or another target—leaves them vulnerable to sides that can exploit width through overlapping full-backs or direct wing play.

Villa’s identity crisis after Emery’s exodus

Unai Emery’s Europa League-winning side has been gutted, with Emi Martínez, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans, and Ollie Watkins all departing in a summer that saw Villa recalibrate their entire squad. Aston Villa have tried to replace them, but their summer signings—John McGinn and Victor Lindelöf among them—are largely unproven at this level. McGinn, a club captain elsewhere, arrives with Premier League experience but not at the standard Villa have grown accustomed to under Emery. Lindelöf, meanwhile, brings defensive nous but lacks the physical profile of Konsa, whose departure leaves a void in Villa’s defensive transitions. The new-look squad lacks the leadership and experience that defined last season’s run to the final. With Emery’s tactical imprint fading, the question is whether McGinn and Lindelöf can steady a dressing room in transition. The early weeks will reveal whether Steven Gerrard’s side can recapture the cohesion that made them European contenders, particularly in midfield where Tielemans’ absence is most keenly felt.

Bournemouth’s quiet window hides deeper issues

Marco Rose’s first summer at Bournemouth has been unusually subdued, with no major departures to offset the managerial change. Alex Scott remains, a rare constant in a squad that has seen wholesale turnover in recent years. Yet the lack of incoming talent raises concerns about depth, particularly if injuries strike. Junior Kroupi’s foot injury, which spared him a potential exit, only underlines the fragility of a squad that has yet to prove it can compete beyond survival battles. Rose’s challenge is to mould a group that can grind out results without the star power of previous seasons, particularly in attack where Dominic Solanke’s lone presence offers little cover for potential absences. The Cherries’ inability to add competition for Scott or Kroupi suggests they are banking on internal progression rather than external reinforcement.

Across the league, the record spending has papered over cracks in some cases, but the underlying issues remain. Manchester City’s deadline-day splurge suggests they believe their squad still needs reinforcement, while Liverpool’s £123m outlay for Bradley Barcola hints at a squad that, for all its quality, still lacks a definitive No. 9. Manchester United, meanwhile, have spent big but face questions over their defensive structure after years of instability, with Lisandro Martínez’s fitness and Tyrell Malacia’s long-term future adding to the uncertainty. Tottenham’s failure to address their goalkeeper situation—despite Hugo Lloris’ departure—leaves them exposed between the posts, while Chelsea’s inability to offload high-earning deadwood has left them with a bloated wage bill and limited flexibility.

The transfer window may be closed, but the real test begins now. Squads have been reshaped, egos managed, and budgets stretched—but the Premier League’s relentless demands wait for no one. The managers who have plugged their holes most effectively will be the ones celebrating in May; those who haven’t may spend the season scrambling for solutions. For Arsenal, the pressure is immediate: can a frontline built around Tzolis and Eddie Nketiah replicate last season’s efficiency? For Villa, the challenge is cultural: can a squad without Emery’s fingerprints rediscover its identity? And for the rest, the question is simple—did they spend wisely, or just spend heavily?
