Alvarez left with two options: Atletico or Arsenal

Julian Alvarez must take one of two paths before the transfer deadline: stay at Atletico Madrid and try to rebuild his connection with the fans or get his head

Football on Sight25 August 2026

Julian Álvarez faces a stark choice before Thursday’s transfer deadline: stay at Atlético Madrid and attempt to repair his fractured relationship with the club’s fanbase or accept that Arsenal is now his only viable exit route.

Why the impasse has reached breaking point

Atlético’s leadership has made its position unambiguous. Neither CEO Miguel Gil Marín nor the Apollo Global Management board will sanction a sale to Barcelona, according to Atlético insider Rubén Uría. The message has been delivered directly to Álvarez, leaving the Argentine international “devastated” after he was booed off during Sunday’s opening LaLiga defeat to Villarreal. The club’s stance has turned the situation “extremely tense,” Uría told Sky Sports News, with the board united behind Gil Marín’s refusal to facilitate a move to their cross-city rivals.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have maintained contact with Atlético’s sporting director Andrea Berta in recent days, but the Gunners’ urgency has not yet translated into concrete progress. Uría noted that Arsenal are not currently hopeful of concluding a deal before 1 September, nor do they expect Álvarez to arrive at the Emirates this week. The player’s preference remains Barcelona, but with that door seemingly closed, the question is whether he will recalibrate his ambitions before the window slams shut.

Arsenal’s £130m lever and the Martinelli distraction

If Álvarez shifts his stance and actively pursues an exit, Atlético are prepared to listen to Arsenal’s reported £130m (€150m) offer. Uría suggested that some figures close to the player now view a permanent stay at the Metropolitano as increasingly untenable. The Gunners’ willingness to meet Atlético’s valuation contrasts with the uncertainty surrounding Gabriel Martinelli, whose own future has been clouded by conflicting reports. Paper Talk claims Arteta is ready to push for Álvarez, while Al-Hilal are closing in on Martinelli for £50m, complicating Arsenal’s squad planning.

The timing could scarcely be more awkward. With the Premier League season less than a fortnight old, Arteta needs clarity on his striking options. Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice have started brightly, but the absence of a proven central striker capable of leading the line has long been a structural weakness. Álvarez’s arrival would address that need, though the club’s hierarchy will demand absolute conviction from the player before sanctioning a deal that would rank among their largest outlays.

What comes next for Álvarez and Atlético

For Álvarez, the next 48 hours will define his Atlético career. If he accepts that Barcelona is no longer an option and signals a genuine desire to join Arsenal, negotiations could accelerate. If he digs in, Atlético’s hierarchy—backed by their owners—will not blink. The club’s refusal to sell to direct rivals sets a precedent that extends beyond this window, and Gil Marín’s stance is unlikely to soften without an offer that meets their valuation.

Atlético’s fans, meanwhile, have already made their feelings clear. The boos in Villarreal were not an aberration; they were a verdict. Rebuilding that connection would require more than a strong preseason or a handful of goals. It would demand proof that Álvarez’s commitment to the club’s project remains unconditional—a gamble that now looks increasingly one-sided.

Arsenal, for their part, will not force the issue. They have monitored the situation closely, but Arteta’s project is not built on desperation. If Álvarez arrives, it must be on terms that reflect his status as a Champions League-winning forward. If he stays, Atlético will have to confront the consequences of a squad player who has lost the trust of their most important audience.

The deadline is approaching, and Álvarez’s path is narrowing to two roads. One leads to London, the other to a club that may no longer want him. The choice is his—but the clock is ticking.
