Anthony Taylor lands Turkish refereeing role after World Cup exit

Anthony Taylor’s retirement from on-field duties has been followed by a high-profile move into football governance, with the former Premier League official appointed as director of elite refereeing by the Turkish Football Federation. The 47-year-old, who stepped away from officiating last month after taking charge of Spain’s 1-0 World Cup last-16 win over Portugal on 6 July, will now shape the future of refereeing standards in a league still recovering from widespread integrity concerns.

From the Premier League to Ankara

Taylor’s appointment underscores the global demand for experienced referees-turned-administrators, with his 20-year career including 668 professional domestic matches, Euro 2020, and three World Cups. His elevation to a leadership role in Turkey arrives amid efforts to rebuild trust after a five-year investigation revealed that 371 of 571 match officials in the country had betting accounts. Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu, then-president of the Turkish Football Federation, framed the challenge bluntly: “If we want to bring Turkish football to the place it deserves, we have to clean up whatever dirt there is.”

Taylor’s move contrasts with the turbulence in Turkish football, where integrity issues have overshadowed sporting achievements. His role will focus on elite refereeing, a position that demands both technical oversight and the authority to implement cultural change within a system still grappling with its past. The appointment also signals Turkey’s ambition to position itself as a hub for football governance, a status reinforced by the country’s growing influence in hosting major tournaments and developing domestic talent.

A career cut short, a legacy secured

Taylor’s retirement came just days after his final match at the World Cup, ending a career that spanned two decades and included some of the game’s most high-pressure fixtures. His decision to step away at the peak of his standing—he was widely tipped to officiate the 2026 final—raises questions about the pipeline of elite referees in England, where the FA has struggled to produce officials of Taylor’s calibre in recent years. The void left by his departure is unlikely to be filled quickly, given the decade-long development required to produce a World Cup referee.

His new role in Turkey may also reignite debates about the global mobility of football’s technical staff. While Taylor’s move is not unprecedented—other retired referees have taken up administrative positions abroad—it highlights how former officials can leverage their expertise beyond their home nations. The Turkish Football Federation’s choice of Taylor, a figure respected for his consistency and communication, suggests a desire for continuity and professionalism in a league where refereeing standards have often been scrutinised.

Turkey’s refereeing reset and the road ahead

The timing of Taylor’s appointment is critical. Turkish football is in the midst of a broader reset, with clubs like Beşiktaş making high-profile signings such as Mohamed Salah to restore credibility on the pitch. Off it, the federation’s push for reform has included structural changes and a commitment to transparency. Taylor’s appointment aligns with this narrative, offering a bridge between past failures and future ambitions.

His success in the role will depend on two key factors: the autonomy to implement changes and the willingness of Turkish referees to embrace new standards. The federation’s past struggles with integrity suggest that cultural shifts are as important as technical ones. Taylor’s experience in managing high-stakes environments—from domestic derbies to World Cup knockout ties—could prove invaluable in navigating these challenges.

For English football, Taylor’s exit leaves a leadership gap that may take years to fill. The FA’s refereeing department has faced criticism for its inability to produce officials capable of reaching the very top, with Taylor’s retirement highlighting the fragility of the system. His move to Turkey, meanwhile, serves as a reminder that football’s governing bodies are increasingly looking beyond their borders for solutions.

As Taylor prepares to take up his new post, his appointment is less a footnote in his career and more a statement of intent from Turkish football. In a league still haunted by its past, his arrival offers a chance to redefine refereeing standards—and perhaps, in time, to restore faith in the game’s integrity.
