Arsenal given hours to convince Julian Alvarez as Atletico Madrid issue final transfer ultimatum

Arsenal face a frantic final push to land Julian Alvarez before the transfer window shuts, with Atletico Madrid issuing an ultimatum to the Argentina striker. The Gunners’ interest has intensified after Barcelona’s pursuit collapsed, leaving Alvarez stranded at the Wanda Metropolitano and the clock ticking toward Sunday’s deadline. With the club hierarchy refusing to negotiate with Barça, Alvarez’s future now hinges on whether Mikel Arteta can persuade him that London offers the clearest path to first-team football.

Atletico’s deadline forces Arsenal’s hand

Atletico Madrid have given Julian Alvarez until Sunday to decide his future, a move that leaves Arsenal with a matter of hours to finalise a deal. The club’s hierarchy reiterated their refusal to do business with Barcelona, a stance that scuppered the player’s long-cherished move to Camp Nou. Alvarez, who has scored 49 goals in 107 appearances since joining Atletico for £81.8m in 2024, has missed training sessions this week citing illness. His absence has done little to dampen Arsenal’s pursuit, though the Gunners will only proceed if the player is fully committed to the move.

The Gunners are preparing to table a bid, with reports in the Mirror Football LIVE blog suggesting a figure in the region of £130m, though no concrete offer has been formally submitted. Manchester City have also been linked with a return for their former striker, yet Alvarez is said to harbour reservations about a second stint in England. Atletico’s demand for a guaranteed £128.4m underscores the financial stakes, while the club must also manage the fallout with supporters after dashing the player’s ambitions. In June, Alvarez stated his desire for a transfer, saying he had spoken to the right people at Atletico and that a move would be best for all parties.

Arsenal’s transfer chessboard in flux

Arsenal’s pursuit of Alvarez is unfolding amid a broader reshuffle in the Premier League. Liverpool are on the brink of signing Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain for £123m, a deal that underscores the escalating costs of elite wingers. The Reds are also closing in on Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr, with a contract running to 2031 reportedly agreed in principle. Meanwhile, Manchester United’s left-back search has stalled after Newcastle refused to sell Lewis Hall, while Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde has told Hansi Flick he wants to fight for his place at Camp Nou.

Arsenal’s own squad moves have included handing a professional contract to teenage defender Marli Salmon, who impressed during pre-season. The club’s focus, however, remains Alvarez, with Arteta’s side prepared to meet Atletico’s valuation if the player signals his willingness. The Gunners’ interest in Alvarez contrasts with their reported monitoring of Real Madrid’s Endrick, a potential alternative if the Atletico deal collapses. Reports suggest Arsenal have held exploratory talks over Endrick, though no concrete offer has been tabled.

The tactical fit and the road ahead

Alvarez’s profile fits Arsenal’s need for a versatile, high-press forward capable of leading the line or playing off Gabriel Jesus. His ability to press defenders and link play would complement Arteta’s system, though his valuation would rank among the club’s most expensive signings. The striker’s reluctance to return to England complicates matters, yet Atletico’s ultimatum may force his hand. If Alvarez declines, Arsenal could pivot to other targets, including Manchester United’s Rasmus Højlund, who has been linked with a move to Barcelona.

The Gunners’ transfer activity also intersects with broader Premier League dynamics. Arsenal and Barcelona have been monitoring Marcus Rashford, though any move would require a dramatic shift in United’s stance. With the window closing, Arteta’s squad-building hinges on securing Alvarez or identifying a viable alternative before the deadline.

Arsenal’s race against time encapsulates the chaos of a transfer window where personal ambition, club politics, and financial demands collide. Atletico’s ultimatum has stripped away the pretence of a leisurely negotiation, leaving Arsenal with a binary choice: convince Alvarez within hours or watch another striker slip through their fingers. The next 48 hours will determine whether Arteta’s project takes a dramatic new shape—or whether the Gunners must regroup yet again.
