Ashley Cole leaves England U21 set-up after five years and sets sight on new role

Ashley Cole’s exit from the England Under-21s after five years as a coach marks the end of an era for the national team’s development setup—and signals the next chapter for one of English football’s most decorated defenders. The Football Association confirmed Cole’s departure on Wednesday, closing a spell that saw him contribute to back-to-back European Under-21 Championship triumphs alongside Lee Carsley. While the FA did not disclose Cole’s immediate plans, the 43-year-old’s coaching CV—spanning Derby County under Frank Lampard, Chelsea’s academy, and a brief head-coaching stint at Serie B’s Cesena—points toward a return to club football.

Cole’s coaching career began in earnest after his 2019 retirement, but his involvement with the England setup predates his formal roles. His five-year tenure with the Under-21s coincided with a golden period for the age group, culminating in consecutive Euros in 2021 and 2023. Carsley, who led both triumphs, praised Cole’s “positive, inspirational impact” and highlighted his “tactical and technical knowledge” as pivotal to the squad’s success. The tribute underscored Cole’s influence beyond the touchline, where his experience as a three-time Premier League winner and Champions League champion with Arsenal and Chelsea shaped a generation of young defenders.

Cole’s club-level coaching path has been less linear. After assisting Lampard at Derby in 2018–19, he moved to Chelsea’s academy before taking his first senior managerial role at Birmingham City in 2022. His brief spell at Everton as assistant under Frank Lampard (again) was followed by a surprise move to Cesena in March 2024. However, Cole left the Italian club in June after citing a “change in the club’s strategy,” a decision he framed as a respectful parting of ways. His social media post thanked the players and staff, reflecting the professionalism that has defined his post-playing career.

England’s pipeline faces a reshuffle as Cole exits

The timing of Cole’s departure is notable amid broader shifts in England’s coaching landscape. Carsley, who also oversees the senior team as interim manager, will now need to restructure his staff for the upcoming European Under-21 Championship qualifiers. The FA has not announced a replacement, but Cole’s exit adds to a fluid environment where continuity is prized. His departure also comes as the England setup grapples with integrating young talents into the senior squad, a process where his firsthand experience as a former Three Lions player could have been invaluable.

For Cole, the next move is likely to be at club level, where his profile aligns with clubs seeking defensive expertise. His Serie B experience at Cesena, though short, demonstrated his willingness to adapt to different footballing cultures—a trait that could appeal to Championship or League One sides. Alternatively, a return to the Premier League’s coaching circuit, perhaps in a specialist defensive coach role, remains plausible given his standing in the game.

Arsenal’s summer transfer focus shifts as Cole’s future takes shape

While Cole plots his next step, Arsenal are deep into their own summer overhaul, with Cole’s former club at the center of transfer speculation. The Gunners are pushing for a deal for Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez, a move that would reunite the Argentina striker with Mikel Arteta’s project. Álvarez, who has been linked with Barcelona, is open to an Arsenal switch, though Atlético’s £128m asking price remains a sticking point. Arsenal’s pursuit reflects their determination to bolster a forward line that has seen Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah face competition for starts.

Elsewhere, Arsenal are monitoring the futures of players like Gabriel Martinelli, who has been eyed by Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in a £50m deal. The club’s transfer activity is part of a broader narrative where they balance ambition with financial prudence—a challenge mirrored by rivals across the Premier League. PSG’s Bradley Barcola is another name on the move list, with Liverpool reportedly closing in on a deal as the French winger’s future at Parc des Princes looks increasingly uncertain.

Cole’s legacy in English football is secure, but his exit from the Under-21s leaves a void that will be hard to fill. His coaching career may still be in its relative infancy, yet his achievements—both as a player and now as a developer of young talent—ensure he remains a figure of influence. As he embarks on the next phase, the question is whether he will return to the international fold or carve out a new identity in club football. One thing is certain: English football will be watching closely.
