Atlético Madrid chief insists Júlian Alvarez will ‘never, ever’ be sold to Barcelona

Atlético Madrid’s chief executive has drawn a definitive line in the sand over Barcelona’s pursuit of Julián Álvarez, declaring the Argentina forward will “never, ever” be sold to their La Liga rivals. Miguel Ángel Gil Marín’s intervention follows a week of escalating tensions, with Atlético accusing Barcelona of “dishonesty” and a “lack of ethics” after Joan Laporta insisted his club remained “very interested” in signing the forward.

Gil Marín’s blunt refusal and the fallout

Speaking to Movistar Plus, Gil Marín framed Atlético’s position as absolute: “We will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances,” he said. “You have my word — the player will most certainly not be transferred to Barcelona.” The club’s board of directors issued a unanimous statement backing the stance, ruling out talks with Barcelona and stating there was “zero consideration” of a transfer before the summer window closes.

The fallout was immediate. Barcelona’s vice-president, Rafa Yuste, accused Atlético of crossing “a red line,” branding Gil Marín’s remarks “a lack of manners and respect.” The dispute has now spilled beyond boardrooms: Álvarez was booed by Atlético fans during their 2-2 draw with Villarreal on Sunday, a reaction tied to his public admission during World Cup duty that he wanted to “fulfil my dream” by leaving the club.

Arsenal’s shadow over the saga

While Barcelona’s pursuit has dominated headlines, Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Álvarez. Gil Marín acknowledged the interest but made clear his preference was for the player to remain in Madrid. “Our intention and my personal dream is for him to stay,” he said, framing Álvarez’s future as a matter of Atlético’s internal resolve rather than external pressure. The Gunners’ potential involvement adds another layer to a transfer picture that now includes two Premier League clubs, but Gil Marín’s stance suggests Atlético are prepared to resist even those overtures.

This isn’t the first time Atlético have faced transfer turbulence this summer. Reports have suggested Álvarez is left with two options: Atlético or Arsenal, a framing that underscores the high stakes for all parties. The club’s refusal to engage Barcelona contrasts sharply with their willingness to entertain interest from outside Spain, but Gil Marín’s language leaves little room for ambiguity.

What comes next

The timing of Gil Marín’s intervention is critical. The transfer window closes on Tuesday, and Atlético’s stance appears designed to close down speculation before it can gather momentum. Gil Marín’s admission that Álvarez is “really struggling” and “very confused” adds a human dimension to the saga, suggesting the player’s future is as much about personal clarity as it is about footballing logic.

For Barcelona, the door is now shut — at least for now. Their president’s public overtures have been met with outright rejection, and the club’s vice-president’s response only deepened the rift. Atlético’s refusal to negotiate underlines a broader frustration with Barcelona’s approach, one Gil Marín described as lacking “ethics, transparency and professionalism.”

Arsenal, meanwhile, may yet emerge as the unexpected beneficiaries. While Gil Marín’s preference is for Álvarez to stay, the club’s willingness to consider external offers complicates the picture. Transfer updates have linked Liverpool with Bradley Barcola, but Álvarez’s situation remains fluid, with Atlético’s resolve the decisive factor.

One thing is certain: this saga is far from over. Atlético’s refusal to bend to Barcelona’s pursuit has set a confrontational tone, but the coming days will reveal whether Gil Marín’s “never, ever” is a bluff or an unbreakable vow. For Álvarez, the pressure is intensifying — and for the clubs involved, the stakes could not be higher.
