Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 win over Malaga: Griezmann’s redemption arc begins

Atletico Madrid’s opening-day victory over Malaga was more than a routine three points—it was a statement of intent. The 2-0 scoreline flattered the hosts, who controlled proceedings with the kind of disciplined intensity that has defined Simeone’s side for a decade. But it was Antoine Griezmann’s second goal, a composed finish after a swift counter, that stole the headlines and hinted at a potential tactical recalibration under their manager.

Griezmann’s redemption begins in front of goal

Griezmann’s return to form has been a slow burn since his move to Inter Miami, but his finish against Malaga suggested a player rediscovering his rhythm. The Frenchman’s second strike, a low drive past the goalkeeper, capped a performance where he looked sharper than he has in months. It was his first competitive goal for Atletico since leaving for MLS, and the relief was palpable in his celebrations. Simeone, never one to overstate, merely nodded—his players had delivered when it mattered most.

This was more than a personal milestone. Griezmann’s involvement in both goals—his movement and link-up play were crucial—underscored why Atletico pursued his return. The club’s recent struggles without his creativity have been well-documented, and his performance offered a glimpse of the player who once terrorised defences in La Liga. Whether this is the start of a sustained revival remains to be seen, but the signs were encouraging.

Simeone’s system adapts, but the steel remains

Atletico’s structure against Malaga was familiar yet subtly refined. The double pivot of Koke and Rodrigo De Paul shielded the defence, while the wingers tucked in to compress space. But the real shift came in the transitions. Malaga, despite their limited threat, were forced into long balls by Atletico’s high press, and the hosts’ ability to regain possession quickly was a reminder of why they remain so difficult to break down.

The second goal, in particular, highlighted Simeone’s tactical flexibility. The move began with a recovered ball in midfield, before a rapid switch of play exploited Malaga’s disjointed shape. It was a microcosm of Atletico’s approach: suffocate in defence, strike with precision in attack. The manager’s willingness to adapt without abandoning his principles has been a hallmark of his tenure, and this performance suggested he may be refining that balance further.

For context, Simeone’s side have often struggled against low-block opponents in recent seasons, but Malaga’s lack of organisation made them an ideal early test. The win sets up a tricky run of fixtures, including a clash with Manchester City in the Champions League, where Atletico will need to replicate this intensity. Preparations for that tie have already begun, with Simeone likely to use the intervening matches to fine-tune his approach.

Malaga exposed, but Simeone’s squad still has questions

Malaga’s performance was a masterclass in how not to set up against a team like Atletico. Their midfield was overrun, their forwards isolated, and their defensive line repeatedly exposed by Atletico’s directness. The visitors managed just two shots on target all game, a damning indictment of their lack of ideas. For a side tipped for a relegation battle, this was a worrying display.

Atletico, by contrast, looked organised and ruthless. The back three—comprising Hermoso, Savio, and Molina—provided stability, while the midfield duo shielded effectively. The only blot on the copybook was a rare lapse in concentration that nearly gifted Malaga a chance, but Simeone’s side have always prided themselves on their resilience. The question now is whether this performance is a one-off or the start of something more sustained.

There are still concerns, however. Atletico’s attack, while functional, lacks the dynamism of past sides. Griezmann’s return helps, but the club’s reliance on experience over youth was evident. The likes of Morata and Depay, despite their pedigree, have struggled to consistently replicate their best form. Simeone will need to address this if Atletico are to challenge for the title again.

Atletico Madrid’s victory over Malaga was a statement, but not the kind that demands hyperbole. It was a controlled, professional display that offered hope without overpromising. Griezmann’s redemption arc may have begun, but Simeone’s side still has work to do. The real test will come in the coming weeks, when the fixtures grow tougher and the margins for error shrink. For now, though, the fans can exhale—Atletico are back, and they mean business.
