Barcelona sign Kerolin from Man City in WSL record sale

Barcelona have shattered their transfer record to land Brazilian forward Kerolin from Manchester City, in a deal worth around £1.25 million that sets a new benchmark for Women’s Super League sales. The 26-year-old’s arrival at the Camp Nou underscores Barça’s determination to rebuild after losing key players to rival WSL clubs this summer, including Alexia Putellas and Mapi León to London City Lionesses.

Why this deal matters now

Kerolin’s transfer is not just a statement of intent—it is a calculated response to Barcelona’s squad overhaul. The club paid more than double their previous record fee, eclipsing the £1 million Manchester United received for Olivia Smith when she moved to Arsenal last summer. Barça’s most expensive incoming deal until now was Keira Walsh, who joined from City in 2022 for €470,000.

Kerolin’s departure leaves Manchester City without one of their most consistent performers. Last season, she scored nine goals in 15 WSL games as City claimed their first league title since 2016. Her ability to deliver in high-pressure moments made her a priority target for clubs across Europe, but Barcelona moved fastest.

The player Barcelona needed

Kerolin’s journey to Europe began in the streets of São Paulo, where she played barefoot against boys older than herself. The physical toll was clear—she once admitted the ball “hurt to kick”—yet she persisted. That resilience has defined her career, from her early days in Brazil to becoming a WSL champion.

Her move to Manchester City in January 2025 was a statement of ambition, but Barcelona’s offer has now redefined her trajectory. As she told Sky Sports at the time: “Always the most highly-ranked players are playing here or in Spain. To be in the vision of the world.” That vision now includes the four-time European champions, where she joins a squad reshaping under new leadership.

What comes next for both clubs

For Barcelona, the challenge is clear: integrate Kerolin into a team that has lost defensive pillars like León and midfield control with Putellas gone. The club’s willingness to break their own transfer policy suggests they view her as a cornerstone for the next cycle.

At Manchester City, the focus shifts to replacing a player who delivered silverware in her first full WSL season. With Kerolin’s departure, City’s attacking options narrow, and their title defence now hinges on finding a successor who can replicate her impact.

This deal also sets a new standard for WSL transfers, one that could influence future negotiations across the league. Clubs will now ask: how much is a proven goal threat worth in a market where ambition is outpacing budgets?

Kerolin’s move is more than a record fee—it is a signal that Barcelona are rebuilding with purpose, and that the WSL’s most coveted talents will command unprecedented value. The next chapter for both clubs begins now, with the spotlight firmly on how this gamble pays off.
