‘Be very careful’: FIFA Vice-President Victor Montagliani warns those trying to oust Infantino

FIFA’s internal tensions spill into public view

FIFA Vice-President Victor Montagliani has issued a blunt warning to anyone considering moves to remove Gianni Infantino from his role as president. Speaking to Sky News, Montagliani cautioned critics to tread carefully, framing any challenge to Infantino’s leadership as a high-stakes gamble. His remarks underscore the fragility of FIFA’s current power structure and the high political stakes surrounding the organisation’s top job.

The warning arrives at a moment when Infantino’s presidency—now in its second decade—faces growing scrutiny over governance, financial transparency, and the direction of global football. Montagliani’s intervention suggests that efforts to unseat the president are not merely hypothetical but are being actively discussed among FIFA’s membership. The vice-president’s language leaves little room for ambiguity: those pursuing such a path should be prepared for serious consequences.

Why now? The timing of the warning

Montagliani’s statement did not occur in isolation. It follows months of behind-the-scenes manoeuvring within FIFA’s executive circles, where dissatisfaction with Infantino’s leadership has reportedly intensified. While the specific triggers remain undisclosed, the timing aligns with broader debates about FIFA’s commercial strategy, its handling of major tournaments, and the distribution of revenue across global football.

Sources close to the situation indicate that some member associations—particularly those from smaller federations—have grown frustrated with what they perceive as a centralised approach that favours larger footballing nations. Infantino’s ability to secure lucrative commercial deals, including the expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams, has been both a source of strength and contention. Montagliani’s warning may be an attempt to deter any premature or fragmented opposition before a unified front can form.

What happens next? The road ahead for FIFA

The vice-president’s comments signal that FIFA’s leadership is preparing for a potential power struggle. Montagliani’s role as a key ally of Infantino suggests that the current administration is not only aware of the challenges but is also willing to push back forcefully. This could mean intensified lobbying among FIFA’s 211 member associations, where loyalty is often traded for access to development funds or tournament hosting rights.

For Infantino’s critics, the path forward is fraught with risk. Any formal challenge would require securing the backing of a two-thirds majority at FIFA’s congress—a threshold that has historically favoured incumbents. Montagliani’s warning may serve as a pre-emptive strike, discouraging dissent before it gains momentum. Yet the fact that such a public statement was made at all indicates that the internal debate has reached a critical juncture.

Tactical implications: How this affects global football

FIFA’s internal politics rarely stay confined to Zurich. The organisation’s decisions on tournament formats, financial regulations, and even disciplinary matters ripple across the footballing world. If Infantino’s position were to weaken, it could disrupt ongoing projects such as the expanded Club World Cup or the 2026 World Cup in North America. Sponsors, broadcasters, and federations would face uncertainty over long-term planning.

Montagliani’s intervention also highlights the delicate balance between FIFA’s commercial ambitions and its governance responsibilities. The organisation’s revenue streams—dominated by broadcasting and sponsorship deals—rely on stability at the top. A prolonged leadership crisis could erode confidence in FIFA’s ability to deliver major tournaments smoothly, potentially affecting everything from ticket sales to broadcast rights negotiations.

For now, the warning stands as a clear message: FIFA’s leadership is prepared to defend its turf. Whether that deterrent is enough to silence critics remains to be seen—but the coming months will reveal just how deep the divisions within world football’s governing body truly run.

One thing is certain: in the high-stakes world of FIFA politics, caution is not just advised—it’s mandatory.
