Bournemouth close in on £11.1m Juanlu

Bournemouth are on the brink of completing an £11.1m deal for Sevilla right-back Juanlu as Marco Rose’s squad takes shape ahead of the club’s first-ever Europa League campaign. The 22-year-old’s arrival would follow the arrivals of Antonio Silva and Alvaro Rodriguez, marking another significant step in Rose’s summer rebuild.

A defensive upgrade with youth and pedigree

The proposed fee breaks down into an initial £9.4m with £1.7m in add-ons, reflecting Juanlu’s standing as one of La Liga’s most promising full-backs. At 6ft 2in, his physical profile and attacking instincts offer a clear upgrade on Bournemouth’s options at right-back, where Max Aarons has been the primary choice in recent seasons. Juanlu’s experience—despite his age—includes heavy involvement in Spain’s youth setups, where he has featured prominently at under-19 and under-21 levels. His ability to overlap and deliver crosses could add a new dimension to Bournemouth’s build-up play, particularly as Rose looks to impose his style from the outset.

This move also underscores Bournemouth’s willingness to invest in defensive depth, a priority that became more urgent after the club’s Europa League qualification. The addition of Silva, a £26.6m centre-back from Benfica, already signals a clear intent to shore up the backline, while Juanlu’s arrival would further solidify the right flank. With Djordje Petrovic entrenched as the first-choice goalkeeper, Rose’s focus now shifts to identifying a backup capable of providing competition and cover.

Squad dynamics and the Unal factor

Bournemouth’s interest in Juanlu coincides with their pursuit of a striker exit, with Enes Unal the most likely candidate. The Turkey international has been linked with moves to Turkey and Saudi Arabia, and his departure would free up funds while addressing a potential surplus in attack. The club’s attacking trio of Eli Junior Kroupi, Rayan, and Alex Scott remain untouchable in the transfer market, according to senior sources, leaving Unal as the most logical candidate for a sale.

Unal’s situation highlights the challenges Rose faces in balancing squad harmony with financial pragmatism. While the club pushes for Europa League progress, they must also manage expectations around player sales and incomings. The Juanlu deal, if completed, would represent a rare summer coup for Bournemouth, combining immediate tactical improvement with long-term potential.

What comes next for Rose’s Cherries

With Juanlu’s move nearing completion, Rose’s attention will turn to finalising his backroom staff and identifying a new deputy for Petrovic. The goalkeeper situation has been a recurring issue in pre-season, and a reliable backup could prove crucial given the demands of domestic league and European football. Bournemouth’s pre-season preparations will be scrutinised closely, particularly as they adapt to a heavier fixture load than in previous campaigns.

For Juanlu, the move represents a significant step in his development. Sevilla’s right-back has been a consistent performer in La Liga, and a move to the Premier League would test his adaptability against some of the world’s best attackers. His arrival could also signal a shift in Bournemouth’s recruitment strategy, with Rose prioritising players who combine technical ability with physicality—a blend that has defined successful Premier League full-backs in recent years.

As the transfer window edges closer to its final days, Bournemouth’s activity reflects a club determined to compete on multiple fronts. The Juanlu deal, if finalised, would be a statement of intent from Rose, who is assembling a squad capable of punching above its weight in both domestic and European competitions. With Silva and Rodriguez already in place, the addition of Juanlu would complete a trio of high-profile signings that could define Bournemouth’s trajectory for the coming season.

For now, all eyes remain on the south coast as the club inches closer to finalising its summer business. The Europa League debut looms, and Rose will need every piece in place to navigate what promises to be a demanding campaign.
