Liverpool’s first Anfield Premier League game under Andoni Iraola ended in frustration after a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, a result that leaves the Reds with two draws from their opening two fixtures. The visitors took the lead through Dan Ndoye before Alexander Isak equalised, only for Morgan Gibbs-White to restore Forest’s advantage from the penalty spot. Victor Munoz’s late deflected strike salvaged a point, but the manner of the concession—amid a botched substitution process—has left Iraola and his players seething.

Anfield chaos: how Liverpool’s defensive frailties and officiating blunders collided

Liverpool’s defensive organisation was repeatedly exposed in the opening half, particularly on the counter. A long ball from Matz Sels released Ndoye, whose finish exposed the Reds’ lack of compactness. Alisson’s stunning save moments later kept the hosts in the game, pushing Igor Jesus’ effort onto the bar, but the damage had already been done. Forest’s second goal arrived after a Liverpool triple substitution was delayed by three minutes when the fourth official, Tim Robinson, failed to have the substitution boards ready. With Liverpool reorganising, Forest took a quick throw-in and Alisson’s foul on Neco Williams gifted Gibbs-White a penalty. Iraola’s post-match anger was palpable: “A professional fourth official cannot take three minutes for the subs,” he told TNT Sports. Alisson, booked for his protests, later kicked a substitution board in frustration, underlining the depth of the club’s exasperation.

The draw follows Liverpool’s equally scrappy 2-2 draw at Newcastle last weekend, leaving Iraola still searching for his first win in charge. The club’s reported interest in Bradley Barcola may yet provide a lift, but for now the Reds’ early-season frailties are impossible to ignore.

Forest’s resilience and Glasner’s tactical gamble pay dividends

Oliver Glasner’s Nottingham Forest arrived at Anfield with a direct, aggressive approach that unsettled Liverpool’s high line. While Forest’s first-half wastefulness—most notably Alisson’s save—prevented a more comfortable scoreline, their willingness to exploit Liverpool’s defensive disorganisation kept them in the game. Glasner’s side now sit unbeaten in their opening two Premier League fixtures, a stark contrast to their struggles last season. Their ability to capitalise on Liverpool’s lapses, combined with a disciplined defensive block when needed, suggests Glasner is beginning to steady the ship. The draw at Anfield, though narrow, is a statement of intent—one that will hearten Forest fans after a turbulent summer.

Forest’s next challenge comes against Leeds United in their following fixture, a match that could further define their early-season trajectory. For now, Glasner will take satisfaction from a point earned against a side tipped for title contention, while Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities remain the biggest concern.

Elsewhere: Everton hold firm at Bournemouth as Coventry and Hull play out cagey stalemate

At the Vitality Stadium, Everton’s defence stood firm against Bournemouth’s early pressure. Nathan Patterson’s aerial dominance and a string of saves from Bartolomiej Petrovic kept the Toffees level at the interval, though Everton’s inability to convert chances remains a talking point. The visitors’ best chance fell to Dwight McNeil, whose effort was comfortably gathered by Petrovic, who produced another sharp stop.

Coventry and Hull City played out a cagey first half at the Coventry Building Society Arena, with both sides struggling to carve out clear openings. Callum McBurnie’s corner deliveries troubled the Coventry defence, but Hull’s best chance fell to Lewis Hall, whose shot was blocked. The stalemate at 0-0 reflects the tight margins in the Championship, where a single moment can decide a game.

Meanwhile, Dundee United surged into a 3-0 half-time lead at Kilmarnock, a result that will lift spirits after last week’s derby defeat. Celtic and Hearts also enjoyed comfortable half-time leads, underscoring the dominance of Scotland’s top sides early in the weekend’s fixtures.

As the Premier League’s title race and relegation battles begin to take shape, the weekend’s results have already thrown up early warnings. Liverpool’s defensive fragility, Forest’s tactical nous, and Everton’s profligacy are themes that will dominate the coming weeks. For Iraola, the clock is ticking; for Glasner, the gamble appears to be paying off.
