Bruno Fernandes’ hat-trick masks Manchester United’s deeper issues

Bruno Fernandes’ three-goal performance delivered Manchester United’s first Premier League win of the season, but the victory masked deeper structural issues that threaten to undermine Michael Carrick’s rebuilding project. After a dismal opening-day defeat to Hull, United again looked shaky at Old Trafford, conceding early to Ipswich before Fernandes’ first goal arrived in the 40th minute. The captain’s hat-trick—his third in the Premier League—sparked a second-half surge that turned a nervy afternoon into a rout, but the manner of the win exposed familiar frailties: defensive lapses, VAR controversies, and a reliance on individual brilliance to paper over cracks.

Defensive chaos overshadows Fernandes’ brilliance

United’s defensive record has been a recurring concern, and Sunday’s performance did little to dispel doubts. Ipswich took the lead in the 29th minute when Leif Davis finished coolly after Abdul Fatawu’s incisive run down the left. Julio Enciso and Daizen Maeda had already tested Senne Lammens, while Luke Shaw was exposed by Fatawu’s dribble, underscoring the fragility of United’s backline. The hosts struggled to contain direct transitions, and their second goal arrived only after Harry Maguire’s accidental handball deflected in via Jacob Greaves—controversially allowed to stand after a VAR review. Maguire himself admitted the deflection was decisive: “If it was my goal, it’d have been disallowed.” The incident highlighted United’s susceptibility to VAR anomalies, a theme that has dogged them in recent seasons. Darren Bent argued the rule needed scrutiny, while Gary Neville suggested the league’s interpretation may require clarification. These moments are no longer isolated; they reflect a systemic vulnerability that even Fernandes’ virtuosity cannot mask.

VAR controversy compounds United’s VAR problem

The debate over Maguire’s handball was not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern. The Premier League’s match centre confirmed the goal stood because Maguire was “not the immediate goalscorer” after an accidental handball, a decision that drew criticism for its inconsistency. The league’s own guidelines state that a goal is punishable if scored “directly from their hand/arm, even if accidental,” yet the deflection into the net created a loophole. This follows months of scrutiny over VAR’s application, from missed red cards to overturned penalties. United’s win, built on a contentious goal, only fuels the perception that their fortunes are increasingly tied to officiating rather than their own cohesion. Fernandes’ hat-trick may have salvaged three points, but it did nothing to resolve the structural questions surrounding Carrick’s defensive setup.

The false dawn of a Carrick revival?

Fernandes’ performance was undeniably world-class. His first goal, a composed left-footed finish after Marcelino Núñez’s slip, showcased his ability to exploit defensive errors. The second arrived via penalty after Cunha was fouled by Greaves, while his third, a clinical finish following a wedged pass, underlined his predatory instincts. The captain also set up Bryan Mbeumo’s lobbed finish, completing a 5-2 scoreline that flattered United’s opponents. Yet the manner of the victory—five goals conceded, two from avoidable errors—raises questions about the team’s ceiling. Fernandes remains United’s most reliable outlet, a fact underscored by his recent PFA Player of the Year award. But his contract talks are ongoing, and reports suggest Barcelona are monitoring his situation, adding another layer of uncertainty. Contract negotiations have opened with a £43m price-tag placed on his future, while reports of a Barcelona bid persist. United cannot afford to rely indefinitely on one man to bail them out.

Carrick’s side showed attacking ambition, registering 33 shots and dominating possession in patches, but their defensive record remains alarming. The win against Ipswich was their first in the Premier League this season, yet it felt less like a turning point and more like a reminder of old habits. Fernandes’ hat-trick provided a morale boost, but the underlying issues—defensive fragility, VAR controversies, and the looming uncertainty over his future—are far from resolved. United’s season will be decided not by isolated moments of brilliance, but by whether Carrick can build a team capable of winning games without relying on them.
