Burnley v West Ham: Championship – live

Burnley and West Ham played out a frantic Championship clash at Turf Moor that swung wildly from one side to the other before ending level, a draw that will feel like a win for Vincent Kompany’s side and a frustration for David Moyes’. The referee for this Championship fixture was Michael Salisbury, who was assisted by assistant referees Marc Perry and Wade Smith, while the fourth official was Scott Oldham.

A game of two halves, then a frantic finish

West Ham started brightly, Max Kilman rising above a Burnley crowd to head them ahead after ten minutes. Manor Solomon doubled the lead midway through the second half, a neat finish after a Burnley clearance fell into his path. Burnley’s response was muted until the final minutes, when Zian Flemming stepped up to coolly convert a stoppage-time penalty after a clumsy foul on Amdouni. The spot was awarded in the 90th minute, with referee Salisbury pointing to the spot after Burnley’s Amdouni was felled by West Ham’s Ogbonna in the box.

But the drama wasn’t over. In the 83rd minute, Flemming levelled again, pouncing on a loose ball in the box to squeeze the ball past Łukasz Fabiański. The visitors nearly snatched it back in added time, but Burnley’s resilience saw them hang on for a share of the points. The late drama unfolded as Burnley threw everything forward, with Laurent’s 89th-minute cross nearly finding a flick from Amdouni, but the ball went out for a goal kick. West Ham’s final substitution saw them switch to a back five, with Nuno Santos withdrawing Solomon for defender Joel Veltman in a bid to shore up their lead.

Why this result matters now

For Burnley, a draw against a Premier League side on their own patch is a statement of intent after their summer rebuild. Kompany’s side have made a cautious start to the Championship campaign, with just one win from their opening three games, but the late drama against West Ham showed they can mix steel with creativity when it matters. The Clarets’ attacking trio of Amdouni, Flemming and Trésor created late chances that exposed West Ham’s defensive frailties, while their pressing intensity grew as the game wore on.

West Ham, meanwhile, will leave Lancashire disappointed. A bright first half faded as Burnley grew into the game, and the visitors’ late collapse—two goals conceded in the final seven minutes—will raise questions about their readiness for a tough Championship campaign. Moyes’ side have already brought in Manor Solomon from Tottenham, and their pursuit of Celtic’s Oliwier Engels shows they mean business in the transfer market. The Hammers’ squad is still bedding in, and the Championship’s physicality caught them out against a Burnley side who grew into the game.

What comes next

The draw keeps Burnley within touching distance of the play-off places, but Kompany will demand more consistency. Their next test comes against a side chasing promotion, and a repeat of this late resilience will be crucial. Burnley’s next fixture sees them travel to face Middlesbrough, a side who have started the season strongly, while West Ham will host Hull City in a bid to rediscover the composure they showed in the opening exchanges.

West Ham’s focus now turns to their next fixture, where they’ll hope to rediscover the composure they showed in the opening exchanges. The Hammers’ squad is still bedding in, and Solomon’s arrival adds another dimension to their attack, but the Championship’s physicality caught them out against a Burnley side who grew into the game.

Tactical takeaways

Burnley’s pressing in the first half struggled to unsettle West Ham, who carved out clear chances through their full-backs Emerson and Johnson, as well as midfield runners like Bowen and Ward-Prowse. West Ham’s 4-2-3-1 setup allowed them to dominate the early exchanges, with their wingers stretching Burnley’s back four and their double pivot of Rice and Paquetá controlling the tempo. However, as the game wore on, Burnley’s intensity grew, with Amdouni and Flemming leading the charge up the pitch. The Clarets’ late surge paid off, with their high press forcing errors from West Ham’s defence, culminating in the two stoppage-time goals.

West Ham’s substitutions—pulling Scarles for Diouf and Nuno for Solomon—showed Moyes’ willingness to gamble, but it was Burnley who had the final say. The Hammers’ defensive frailties were exposed by Burnley’s late surge, with their high line leaving them vulnerable to quick transitions. Burnley’s resilience in the final 20 minutes highlighted their ability to adapt, while West Ham’s lack of composure in the closing stages will be a concern for Moyes as they look to push for automatic promotion.

This draw leaves both sides with work to do, but Burnley will take heart from their late resilience, while West Ham must address their frailties in defence if they’re to challenge for automatic promotion.
