Celtic’s Baur signing: How Rodgers is rebuilding midfield after Kyogo’s exit

Brendan Rodgers’ midfield rebuild at Celtic has taken another step forward with the £6.8m capture of German under-21 international Mika Baur. The 22-year-old joins from recently promoted Bundesliga side Paderborn, adding technical quality and versatility to a department still adjusting after Kyogo Furuhashi’s exit. With Rodgers prioritising creativity in the engine room, Baur’s arrival arrives at a pivotal moment as Celtic chase Champions League qualification.

From Freiburg to Glasgow: a scouted profile

Baur arrives with a reputation built at Paderborn, where he was named the club’s player of the year last season. Across 33 league games, he contributed four goals and five assists, performances that convinced Celtic to meet his £4.5m initial fee plus £2.3m in add-ons. The deal mirrors the structure used for summer recruits Camilo Duran, Kasper Høgh and Haissem Hassan, with bonuses tied to Champions League progression—an incentive that underscores Celtic’s ambition under Rodgers. Baur’s pathway is familiar: he graduated from Freiburg’s academy before moving to Paderborn in 2024, a route that has produced technically adept midfielders comfortable in tight spaces.

His versatility will be crucial. Rodgers has repeatedly stressed the need for midfielders who can link play, press in blocks and rotate into deeper positions. Baur’s ability to operate as a single pivot or in a double pivot offers cover for the club’s existing options, particularly as they navigate a congested schedule. The timing is acute: Celtic face LASK Linz in next week’s Champions League play-off, and Baur’s registration could provide an immediate tactical option if fit.

Midfield overhaul: depth meets dynamism

Rodgers’ summer has been defined by targeted recruitment in midfield, where the loss of key personnel created a clear gap. Baur joins Duran and Hassan in bolstering the creative spine, while Høgh’s early-season impact—including the fastest goal in 15 years against Kilmarnock—has already reshaped expectations. The manager’s blueprint appears to prioritise players who can dictate tempo, press aggressively and deliver under pressure, traits Baur demonstrated during Paderborn’s promotion campaign.

The squad’s evolution reflects a broader philosophy: young, high-pressing footballers who can thrive in European competition. Baur’s Bundesliga experience, albeit in a newly promoted side, carries weight. Paderborn’s promotion was built on collective endeavour rather than individual flair, yet Baur’s individual output—four goals and five assists—suggests he can influence games beyond mere work rate. His arrival also hints at a willingness to gamble on unproven talent with tangible upside, a strategy Celtic have deployed with mixed results in recent years.

Managerial confidence and squad evolution

Martin O’Neill’s endorsement of Baur underscores the club’s confidence in the deal. The new signing’s pre-season preparation—described as “good shape” and “ready to go”—aligns with O’Neill’s public backing for Rodgers’ project. The manager’s hospitalisation after surgery earlier this summer briefly clouded preparations, but his swift return to oversee signings like Baur signals stability at the top.

Baur’s own words—”It’s absolutely the right move”—carry the weight of due diligence. His consultation with Nicolas Kuhn, a teammate at Paderborn, provided the final push, suggesting the decision was as much about cultural fit as footballing logic. For a club chasing domestic dominance and European relevance, such conviction matters. The midfield rebuild is far from complete, but Baur’s arrival is a calculated step toward a more fluid, press-resistant system.

As Celtic prepare for a Champions League play-off that could define their season, Baur’s registration adds another layer to Rodgers’ evolving squad. The £6.8m outlay is substantial, but the structure of the deal—bonuses tied to European progression—ensures Celtic only pay fully if the gamble pays off. In a transfer window where every signing is scrutinised, Baur represents a gamble worth taking.
