Chelsea ready last-ditch Alex Scott bid with Enzo Fernandez closer to £120m exit

Chelsea’s midfield reshuffle is entering its decisive phase, with Manchester City closing in on Enzo Fernández and the Blues now turning to Bournemouth’s Alex Scott as a direct replacement. The Argentine’s exit is closer than ever after City confirmed their willingness to meet Chelsea’s £120 million valuation, while Scott remains the club’s preferred option despite Bournemouth’s refusal to sell. The race to finalise both deals could define Chelsea’s transfer business before the deadline, with the Blues desperate to avoid a repeat of last summer’s chaotic exodus.

Fernández’s exit gathers momentum as City prepare a late bid

Manchester City are preparing a last-ditch approach for Enzo Fernández, with Chelsea’s £120 million asking price no longer a barrier. Sources indicate City have privately accepted the valuation and are aware of the midfielder’s desire to reunite with former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. The Blues, meanwhile, have made it clear they will not sanction Fernández’s departure without a replacement in place, tying their hands in negotiations. Fernández’s stance has softened over recent weeks, with insiders suggesting he views a move to City as a natural progression after his breakthrough season under Maresca. The Blues’ insistence on a replacement reflects their broader transfer strategy, which has seen them pursue multiple avenues to balance the books while strengthening the squad. Sky Sports’ reporting on Fernández’s potential exit underscores the urgency in Chelsea’s search for a successor.

City’s interest in Fernández is not just about replacing Rodri’s midfield dominance but also about securing a player who has thrived in a system that mirrors their own. Fernández’s ability to dictate tempo and his pressing intensity under Maresca make him a near-perfect fit for a City side that values technical midfielders. The Blues’ £120 million valuation, while steep, reflects Fernández’s status as one of Europe’s most coveted midfielders, with his contract expiring in 2027 adding further urgency to the situation.

Scott remains Chelsea’s priority despite Bournemouth’s resistance

Chelsea have doubled down on Alex Scott as their first-choice replacement, despite Bournemouth’s refusal to entertain offers. The Blues previously tabled a £64 million bid for the 23-year-old, only to be rebuffed, but they are now prepared to escalate their pursuit with a significantly improved offer. Scott, a highly rated prospect who featured in England’s pre-World Cup training camp, has yet to sign a new contract with Bournemouth, leaving the door ajar for a late move.

The challenge for Chelsea is substantial. Bournemouth have repeatedly stated they will not sell Scott, and in a congested transfer market, extracting him at this stage would require a monumental effort. Yet the Blues’ desperation to replace Fernández has intensified their pursuit, with Scott’s profile aligning with their need for a dynamic, young midfielder capable of dictating play. The club’s willingness to test Bournemouth’s resolve suggests they view Scott as the most viable option among a limited pool of targets. Scott’s versatility—capable of playing as a box-to-box midfielder or in a deeper role—adds to his appeal, though his lack of top-flight experience in a consistent starting role remains a concern.

Martínez emerges as an unexpected alternative

Aston Villa’s pursuit of Emiliano Martínez has opened an unexpected pathway for Chelsea, with the World Cup-winning goalkeeper now available as Villa look to recoup funds following Zion Suzuki’s arrival. The Blues have been offered Martínez, who has been linked with a move to Juventus but remains open to a switch to Stamford Bridge. Villa’s need to balance their books could force their hand, making Martínez a potential wildcard in Chelsea’s transfer strategy.

While Martínez’s inclusion in Chelsea’s plans adds another layer of complexity, it also highlights the club’s willingness to explore unconventional solutions. The goalkeeper’s profile contrasts sharply with Scott’s, but in a transfer window where value and flexibility are paramount, Martínez’s availability could provide Chelsea with leverage in other negotiations. Martínez’s experience in big games and his penalty-saving record make him an intriguing option, though his age (34) and the financial commitment required could deter Chelsea from pursuing him as a long-term solution. Sky Sports’ reporting on Martínez’s potential move underscores the fluidity of Chelsea’s transfer planning.

What comes next: tactical and financial implications

Chelsea’s transfer activity is now a high-stakes balancing act. Replacing Fernández with Scott would require a financial outlay that could exceed £100 million, while Martínez’s arrival would necessitate a restructuring of the squad’s wage structure. The Blues’ insistence on a like-for-like replacement for Fernández suggests they view Scott as the most natural successor, but Bournemouth’s intransigence complicates matters.

The club’s broader transfer strategy has also been shaped by external factors, including Manchester United’s pursuit of Lewis Hall and City’s interest in Pedro Neto. These competing narratives illustrate the crowded market for Chelsea’s midfield and attacking options, forcing them to prioritise deals that align with both sporting and financial objectives. Sky Sports’ coverage of City’s wing targets further emphasises the competitive landscape Chelsea must navigate.

With the deadline looming, Chelsea’s transfer window is reaching its climax. Fernández’s exit is all but confirmed, and Scott remains the most plausible replacement, though Bournemouth’s stance could yet derail the deal. Martínez’s availability adds a wildcard element, but the Blues’ primary focus appears to be securing Scott before exploring Plan B. The next 48 hours will determine whether Chelsea can execute a seamless midfield overhaul or face a period of uncertainty as they regroup.
