Could Everton play at Goodison Park once again after Carabao Cup bombshell?

Everton’s Carabao Cup campaign has taken an unexpected detour, but not the one some supporters had hoped for. The Toffees’ second-round tie against Preston North End will not return to Goodison Park, despite the historic ground’s brief cameo in the competition this month. Instead, the fixture remains at Deepdale, where Preston hosted Huddersfield Town in the first round—a match played on a freshly renovated pitch that has since become the subject of fan speculation.

Why Goodison Park briefly hosted a Carabao Cup tie

Preston North End’s temporary relocation to Goodison Park was a consequence of £1.5 million worth of pitch redevelopment at Deepdale. The work, which included installing a hybrid playing surface with upgraded drainage and heating systems, left the Lancashire club without a suitable home for their opening Carabao Cup clash. The result? A 2-1 victory over Huddersfield Town at Everton’s former stadium, a venue steeped in the club’s 128-year history. Yet by Monday evening, the Toffees were drawn to face Preston in the second round—only for the fixture to be confirmed for Deepdale, not the iconic Goodison.

BBC journalist Giulia Bould moved swiftly to address supporter speculation on social media, clarifying that the second-round tie would not be played at Goodison Park. The confirmation dashed hopes of a surreal reunion for Everton’s first team at their spiritual home, which has been mothballed since relocating at the start of the 2024/25 season. Instead, Preston will host their next Carabao Cup match at their own ground, as originally scheduled, while Everton prepare for a trip to Lancashire.

What this means for Everton’s Carabao Cup run

The Toffees’ progression in the competition now hinges on a trip to Deepdale, a venue they have visited in recent seasons but one that carries added significance given the circumstances. Everton’s Carabao Cup campaign began with a first-round win over a Championship side, and their second-round opponents—Preston—will arrive with momentum after their Goodison Park success. The Toffees, meanwhile, have been without their traditional home since relocating to the temporary stadium, making this tie a rare opportunity to reconnect with a familiar yet distant ground.

While the fixture’s location may lack the nostalgia of Goodison Park, the competitive stakes remain clear. Everton will face a Preston side buoyed by their recent cup win, and the Toffees will need to adapt quickly to the challenges of a midweek away game. The draw has also set up a potential third-round clash with Chelsea, a tie that could further disrupt fixture schedules across multiple competitions—a scenario recently documented in fixture chaos involving eight teams.

The bigger picture: Everton’s stadium transition and squad evolution

Everton’s Carabao Cup tie with Preston arrives amid broader changes at the club, both on and off the pitch. The Toffees’ move to the temporary stadium has coincided with a period of transition, with squad overhauls and managerial adjustments shaping their identity. Reports of potential transfer activity, including a £7 million deal for Arsenal’s Morten Frimpong Norgaard, underscore the club’s efforts to bolster their options in midfield—a position that has often been a source of debate in recent seasons.

Speculation around the futures of midfielders Anthony Gordon and Dwight McNeil has also intensified, with Everton reportedly exploring a swap deal with Crystal Palace that could reshape both squads. Such moves would not only alter the team’s dynamics but also influence their approach in cup competitions, where squad depth and tactical flexibility are critical. The Preston tie, therefore, serves as an early test of Everton’s adaptability, both in terms of personnel and their ability to navigate a congested fixture calendar.

The Toffees’ Carabao Cup journey may lack the drama of a Goodison Park return, but it offers a chance to assert themselves in a competition they have historically targeted. With Preston’s Deepdale pitch now fully prepared for their Championship fixture on 22 August, the stage is set for a competitive encounter—one that will unfold far from the club’s former home but still within the fabric of Everton’s evolving narrative.
