Craig Kirby: The 50-year-old footballer who inspired millions with his viral final season

Craig Kirby’s phone buzzes as he steps into the gym above the Methodist church in Rochdale. Another notification lights up the screen: his latest TikTok clip has just passed 85,000 views. It’s a short montage of Kirby gliding between defenders on a bobbly park pitch, his wife Lindsay filming from the touchline. “Fitness and movement off the ball are 90% of the game,” reads the caption. By the time the video stops trending, it will reach 340,000 views. But this is routine now. The clip pinned to the top of his profile has been seen 2.9 million times—a January afternoon at Whitworth Valley, rain falling on the pitch, the rolling Lancashire hills behind him. The title is simple: “Well beaten today. Not bad for 50 though.”

The season that changed everything

Kirby had considered walking away from football after the death of his son Sebastian in December 2023. The grief was suffocating, the thought of stepping onto the pitch again unbearable. But his wife Lindsay suggested he keep playing—she would film his matches, share them with family and friends. They expected a handful of views, maybe a few hundred at most. Instead, the first clip exploded. Within days, it had crossed a million. Kirby was stunned. “We were like: ‘Wow?!’ Lots of things have happened since and it has made me reevaluate.”

What began as a private act of defiance—turning up to a 50-year-old’s amateur fixture—became a public testament to resilience. Kirby’s profile, “Football at 50”, now has 32,000 followers on TikTok and 28,000 on Instagram, according to his latest social media analytics. His videos aren’t polished productions. They’re raw, unfiltered snapshots: a keepy-up against a gym wall, a sprint session in the rain, a midfield interception on a muddy Saturday morning. There’s no agenda, no manufactured drama—just a man playing football, documenting the process, and letting the internet do the rest.

His physique still turns heads. A former personal trainer, Kirby’s body is lean and strong, his hair now streaked white—a stark contrast to the younger players around him. He’s even working on his speed, sprint training to shave precious seconds off his movement. “I am probably enjoying football right now more than I did in my late 20s or early 30s,” he admits. The joy is palpable, the authenticity unmistakable. His most recent match footage shows him intercepting a through ball in the 68th minute, then spraying a 30-yard diagonal to a teammate—effortless, precise, and undiminished by age.

From army life to amateur glory

Kirby’s football journey hasn’t followed the conventional path. As a teenager, he had trials at Blackburn Rovers but chose the army over a professional career, following in his father’s footsteps. When he left the forces in his mid-20s, opportunities arose at Cambridge United and Kettering—clubs that could have given him a foothold in the professional game. But with a young family to support, the risks were too great. He chose stability over ambition, and football became a weekend escape rather than a career.

Now, decades later, Kirby’s story has resonated far beyond Rochdale. His rise mirrors the quiet power of grassroots football, a world often overshadowed by the high-stakes drama of the Premier League. While elite clubs chase trophies and transfer records, Kirby’s viral fame stems from something far simpler: showing up, playing with heart, and letting others see it. It’s a reminder that football’s soul still thrives in parks and Sunday leagues, not just in stadiums.

His videos have struck a chord with players and fans alike. One clip, showing Kirby threading a pass between two defenders, drew comparisons to the elegance of Whaley’s perfect chip at the US Amateur—a moment of skill that transcended age and competition. Another, where Kirby juggles a ball in his gym, echoes the dedication seen in athletes like Rory McIlroy, who remains in contention after a steady round. These parallels aren’t forced; they’re organic. Kirby’s story fits into football’s broader narrative of passion over paychecks, grit over glamour.

The man behind the myth

What makes Kirby’s journey so compelling isn’t just the viral success—it’s the emotional core. He’s not performing for likes or chasing validation. He’s playing because it’s what he knows, what he loves, and what keeps him connected to the game after loss. His wife’s decision to film their matches wasn’t about creating content; it was about preserving a moment, a memory, a reason to keep going.

Kirby avoids the toxicity that can fester in amateur football. His feed is clean, focused on the positives—movement, technique, camaraderie. There’s no place for the aggro, the petty arguments, the posturing that often defines lower-league football. Instead, there’s a quiet dignity. A 50-year-old midfielder, still running the show, still making the right decisions, still inspiring others just by showing up.

His story also highlights how social media can amplify voices that might otherwise go unheard. In an era where football is dominated by transfer sagas and managerial meltdowns, Kirby’s rise is a refreshing counterpoint. It’s not about breaking records or signing mega-deals; it’s about authenticity, resilience, and the power of storytelling. His followers aren’t just counting likes—they’re counting on him to keep playing, to keep inspiring, to keep reminding them why football matters.

As the final whistle approaches on his viral season, Kirby’s legacy is already secure. He didn’t set out to become an internet sensation. He just wanted to play football. And in doing so, he reminded millions why the game still means so much.
