Crystal Palace latest: Eagles closing in on Khalaili signing

Crystal Palace are reportedly closing in on a deal for promising winger Ousmane Khalaili, according to Sky Sports, as Pierre Sage looks to reshape a squad already altered by summer departures and financial constraints. The Eagles, fresh off a third trophy in 12 months under Oliver Glasner, now face the dual challenge of navigating a Europa League campaign while rebuilding under new management. With the window closing, the club’s next moves will define whether Sage can sustain the momentum Glasner built—or risk stalling before the season even begins.

Why Khalaili matters now

The pursuit of Khalaili arrives at a pivotal moment for Palace. Glasner’s departure to Nottingham Forest in July left a void not just in tactics but in squad leadership, with Maxence Lacroix’s exit compounding defensive fragility. Sage, appointed three weeks before Glasner’s move, inherits a side that retains eight starters from last season’s FA Cup final win over Manchester City, but faces the immediate task of shoring up thin areas. Khalaili, 21, offers a direct outlet on the left wing, a position Palace have struggled to fill since Dwight McNeil’s swap deal with Everton in January. That swap, which saw Brennan Johnson leave for £80m and return for Dwight McNeil, has already left a financial footprint that complicates further recruitment.

The club’s reported interest in Khalaili comes amid budget constraints from the Selhurst Park redevelopment. Work finally began on the new main stand this summer, a decade after plans were first mooted, but the project’s cost and timeline—expected completion in late 2028 or early 2029—add pressure to balance ambition with pragmatism. Sage’s ability to navigate these constraints will be tested early, with Europa League qualifiers looming and key players like Daniel Muñoz, Adam Wharton, and Ismaïla Sarr still unsettled.

Sage’s balancing act

The Frenchman’s challenge is twofold: sustain Glasner’s legacy while adapting to his own philosophy. Glasner’s Conference League triumph capped an unprecedented 12-month period, but his departure to a rival club—Forest, who are embroiled in a legal dispute with Palace over a Gibbs-White banner row—has left a sour taste. Sage, meanwhile, must steady a side that has already seen Lacroix and McNeil leave, with the latter’s swap deal exposing the risks of overpaying for unproven talent. The January arrivals of Jørgen Strand Larsen and Brennan Johnson now look misjudged, with Strand Larsen’s future uncertain and Johnson’s return part of a cost-neutral exchange.

Sage’s first real test comes in October, when Forest visit Selhurst Park. The fixture, delayed by Glasner’s move, will be a statement of intent—but one Sage cannot afford to lose. The club’s reported focus on Khalaili suggests a preference for quick, affordable solutions over long-term gambles, a strategy that mirrors the Coventry deal for Yirenkyi in the transfer roundup, where pragmatism trumped headline ambition. Transfer roundup: Coventry to make Yirenkyi new record signing, Crystal Palace to swoop for Gozo highlighted how lower-league clubs are making bold moves, while Palace tread carefully.

What comes next

The next fortnight will determine whether Khalaili becomes Sage’s first marquee signing or another missed opportunity. The Europa League qualifiers, likely to feature early August fixtures, add urgency, as does the need to retain key players. Daichi Kamada’s contract extension buys time, but the likes of Muñoz and Wharton remain targets, with Saudi interest in the former complicating matters. Sage’s squad-building will also be shaped by the club’s off-field pressures, with majority owners reportedly keen to sell their stakes despite recent success.

For Palace fans, the narrative is shifting from Glasner’s fairytale to Sage’s reality. The new stand, once a distant dream, is finally under construction, but the club’s financial health remains fragile. Sage’s ability to blend youth with experience—without repeating the mistakes of January—will define whether Palace can avoid the predicted 16th-place finish in Guardian writers’ 2026-27 preview. The Khalaili deal, if completed, would be a small but significant step toward proving that Glasner’s legacy can outlast his tenure.
