Declan Donnelly in tears as he pays emotional tribute to ‘childhood hero’ Kevin Keegan

Declan Donnelly’s voice cracked as he recalled the moment Newcastle United signed Kevin Keegan in 1982, a signing that ignited a lifelong passion for football and forged an unbreakable bond with the club. Speaking on the Hanging Out With Ant & Dec podcast, the Geordie presenter admitted he had shed tears upon hearing of Keegan’s death at the age of 75 after a battle with stage four cancer.

Keegan’s legacy: more than a footballer

The former Newcastle manager and player was described by Donnelly as the “David Beckham of his day,” a player whose arrival at St James’ Park in the early 1980s transcended sport in the North East. Donnelly, who grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne, traced his own football fandom directly to Keegan’s move from Southampton, a moment that shaped his childhood and beyond. “He was my childhood hero,” Donnelly said. “When we got the news through last week, I was absolutely devastated.”

Anthony McPartlin, Donnelly’s presenting partner, echoed the sentiment, calling Keegan a “true legend to Newcastle United supporters.” Their tribute underscored how Keegan’s energy and enthusiasm extended beyond the pitch, offering hope and identity to a region deeply connected to its football club. Donnelly recounted meeting Keegan as a boy after winning a competition, an encounter he described as “the best” and a rare exception to the adage that you should never meet your heroes.

Newcastle’s turbulent summer casts a shadow

The emotional tribute came amid a summer of upheaval at Newcastle United, where the club’s direction has been thrown into doubt following the sudden exit of manager Eddie Howe. Reports suggest Newcastle are pressing ahead with a move for Sporting Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, but the club’s transfer activity has been overshadowed by uncertainty over the dugout. Howe’s departure has triggered speculation over his successor, with the Saudi-based Michael Jaissle reportedly a favourite to take over.

Meanwhile, the club’s captain, Bruno Guimarães, has become the subject of transfer speculation, with Arsenal closing in on a deal reported to be worth around £80 million including add-ons. The potential loss of Guimarães would mark another blow to a squad already reshaped by the summer’s instability, raising questions about the club’s long-term vision under new leadership.

The wider picture: ambition and ownership

Newcastle’s ownership story has taken another twist with former co-owner Amanda Staveley reportedly in talks to acquire a 25 per cent stake in West Ham United. Staveley and her husband, Mehrdad Ghodoussi, sold their Newcastle United shares two years ago but now appear set on a return to football through a consortium backed by investors from the United States and the Far East. Their ambitions for West Ham extend beyond a minority stake, with plans to invest heavily in the playing squad and even explore the purchase of the London Stadium.

Staveley’s potential move to West Ham follows the resignation of David Sullivan as chairman after historic sexual allegations, which he has denied and pledged to contest legally. The developments at St James’ Park and the London Stadium highlight contrasting fortunes: Newcastle navigating transition under a new manager, while West Ham seek reinvention after relegation.

Donnelly’s tribute to Keegan served as a poignant reminder of the emotional core that binds football clubs to their communities. In an era of financial power and globalisation, Keegan’s legacy endures as a symbol of passion, hope, and local identity—qualities that feel increasingly rare in the modern game. As Newcastle’s future hangs in the balance, the memory of Keegan’s impact offers a stark contrast to the uncertainty swirling around St James’ Park.
