Dejected Brook falls shy of century at Headingley again!

Harry Brook’s latest near-miss at Headingley will linger long after the stumps were drawn. The England batter departed for 91, stumped by Pakistan’s Ali Usman in the 47th over, leaving his team 15 runs short of a target that now feels like a mirage. It is the second time in three years that Brook has finished nine shy of a Headingley century, a pattern that sharpens the focus on his form ahead of the winter ahead.

What happened in the 47th over

Brook walked to the middle with England needing 85 from 10 overs and Pakistan sensing late pressure. Ali Usman, Pakistan’s off-spinner, delivered a quicker, straighter ball that kept low. Brook went for a defensive prod, missed the line, and was out stumped as Mohammad Rizwan whipped off the bails. The dismissal arrived with Brook on 91, his sixth fifty-plus score in Tests without converting to three figures.

England’s innings had flickered after a solid start. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett put on 72 in 14 overs before Crawley fell to Shaheen Afridi for 32. Duckett and Brook then added 59 together, but the loss of Duckett for 37 in the 34th over nudged the required rate toward six an over. Brook’s dismissal sealed the game, Pakistan winning by 26 runs inside four days.

Why this matters now

Brook’s inability to convert fifties into hundreds is becoming a narrative that overshadows his undoubted talent. With the Ashes rotation looming and a packed winter schedule, England cannot afford another let-down from a batter who has already been dropped and recalled. His struggles at Headingley—where he made 46 and 91 in the same series two years ago—now read like a second home record rather than an anomaly.

For Pakistan, the win underlines their depth. After being asked to follow on, they batted with discipline, posting 296 in their second innings before restricting England to 268 all out. Shan Masood’s 75 and Saud Shakeel’s 63 ensured Pakistan had enough batting to force a result, while their spinners kept the pressure on when it mattered most.

What comes next

England’s next Test is the fourth and final match of this series, also at Headingley, starting on July 26. A draw would secure Pakistan’s first series win in England since 2016, while a win for England would level the series. Brook will have another chance to banish his Headingley ghosts, but the weight of expectation is growing heavier with each near-miss.

Pakistan’s bowlers, meanwhile, will head to The Oval with momentum. Their attack has shown they can exploit English conditions, and a series victory would be a statement of intent before the World Test Championship final next year. For Brook, the challenge is clear: convert one of these fifties into a hundred, or risk seeing his place in the side reassessed before the winter.

For now, Headingley has given Brook another 91 to remember—and another century denied.
