Dowman and Tzolis light up Arsenal’s rebuild in Girona rout

Arsenal’s pre-season demolition of Girona offered more than just a statement of intent—it provided a glimpse of a revitalised attack under Mikel Arteta, with Max Dowman and Christos Tzolis stepping out of the shadows to claim goals in a 4-1 rout. The scoreline flattered Girona, but the performance revealed a tactical flexibility that has been absent in recent campaigns. With Arteta’s rebuild gathering pace, the Gunners’ frontline is no longer a source of frustration but a potential weapon.

Dowman’s composure underpins Arteta’s new-look attack

Max Dowman’s double strike against Girona was not just a personal milestone but a tactical one. The 21-year-old, who has spent the past two seasons on loan at Brentford, showcased the composure that convinced Arteta to bring him into the first team. His first goal, a calm finish after latching onto a through ball in the 23rd minute, underscored his ability to play in the half-spaces—a role Arteta has increasingly favoured. The second, a composed header from a set-piece in the 67th minute, demonstrated his aerial presence, a trait Arsenal have lacked since the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Dowman’s inclusion comes as Arteta continues to reshape his squad, with the Gunners prioritising players who fit his system over big names. His partnership with Christos Tzolis could define the early stages of the season, offering a blend of creativity and directness that has been missing. The contrast with last summer’s chaotic rebuild—where Arsenal shipped out several first-team players—highlights the shift in approach under Arteta, who has retained key performers like Declan Rice and William Saliba while integrating younger talent.

Tzolis’ directness injects fresh energy into the attack

Christos Tzolis, the Greek international who joined on loan from Norwich City, provided the dynamism Arsenal’s attack has lacked. His goal, a low-driven finish from inside the box in the 34th minute, was a reminder of his ability to exploit defensive gaps with pace and precision. Unlike last season’s stagnation, where Arsenal’s forwards struggled to link play, Tzolis’ movement offered a direct route to goal—something Arteta has demanded. His willingness to run in behind defences, combined with Dowman’s link-up play, suggests a more fluid system is taking shape.

The Greek winger’s arrival follows months of speculation linking him with a permanent move to Arsenal, with reports suggesting the club had been monitoring his progress closely. His integration into Arteta’s system reflects a broader trend: the manager’s willingness to trust young talent, provided they meet his technical and tactical demands. Tzolis’ performance in Girona—where he also forced a crucial save from the Girona goalkeeper—was a microcosm of his game: relentless in pursuit of space, and clinical when presented with chances.

Arteta’s system evolves as squad overhaul continues

Mikel Arteta’s tactical adjustments were evident in Girona. The Gunners’ pressing was more aggressive, their transitions sharper, and their shape more adaptable. The inclusion of Dowman and Tzolis in the same XI highlighted Arteta’s search for balance—between creativity and directness, between youth and experience. The fact that both players scored in their first competitive outing together is no coincidence; it reflects Arteta’s belief in their synergy.

Yet the rebuild is far from complete. While Arsenal have retained core players, their transfer activity has been constrained by financial prudence. The club’s decision to allow players like Granit Xhaka and Gabriel Jesus to leave—part of a deliberate squad overhaul—has freed up funds for targeted signings like Dowman and Tzolis. The contrast with last summer’s scattergun approach—where Arsenal splashed out on high-profile but unproven talent—is stark. This time, Arteta appears to be building a squad with clear roles in mind, even if the headline numbers don’t yet reflect the scale of the changes.

Arsenal’s pre-season win was more than just a morale boost—it was a tactical blueprint. Dowman’s composure and Tzolis’ directness offered a glimpse of a revitalised attack, one that could propel the Gunners back into the Premier League’s upper echelons. Arteta’s system is still evolving, but the signs in Girona were undeniably positive. The real test will come in the league, where consistency—not just individual flashes—will determine whether this rebuild can sustain a title challenge. For now, though, the early returns are promising.
