Doyle: Ebor test should suit Klassleader

Hollie Doyle has identified Klassleader as a key player to watch in Saturday’s £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor Handicap at York, backing the Lope De Vega colt to rediscover his winning form on the final day of the Ebor Festival. Doyle, a Sky Sports Racing ambassador and a regular face on the Knavesmire, believes the son of Lope De Vega is well suited by the trip and conditions after a mixed start to his campaign. “I think he’s well treated,” Doyle told Sky Sports Racing. “He won a mile-and-a-half handicap here in May off 98, and the handicapper has been kind to him again.”

York’s headline act under the spotlight

The Ebor, Britain’s most valuable handicap, is the centrepiece of York’s fixture list, and Doyle’s endorsement of Klassleader adds weight to the son of Lope De Vega’s chances. The five-year-old, trained by William Haggas, has already shown his liking for the track, winning a mile-and-a-half handicap here in May. That victory came off a mark of 98, and Doyle suggests the handicapper has been generous in assigning him a similar rating for Saturday’s race. “He justified favouritism that day,” she added. “The way he saw out the trip was impressive.”

Doyle’s husband, jockey Tom Marquand, was less convinced after Klassleader’s run in the Old Newton Cup at Newmarket last month, believing the undulating track unsettled the horse. Yet Doyle counters that the colt has the class to bounce back, particularly over a trip he has already conquered. “Tom felt he didn’t handle the undulations,” she explained. “But he’s a horse who stays well, and York’s contours suit him better.” With Daiquiri Bay, another improving handicapper, also in the field after a strong run at Royal Ascot, the Ebor looks set for a competitive renewal. The Willie Mullins runner Love Me Tender, fresh from Germany, adds another layer of intrigue, though his handicap debut over a trip he has never run suggests he may need time.

Group One showdowns and fresh challenges

Before the Ebor, the Group One Sky Bet City Of York Stakes (3.00) offers a chance for top milers to shine, and Doyle tips Eve Johnson Houghton’s Zavateri to deliver. The five-year-old, a Group One winner at two in soft ground, disappointed at Ascot in the Queen Anne but showed encouraging form behind Bow Echo in the Sussex Stakes. Doyle argues that Zavateri’s pedigree and adaptability make him a threat, especially if the pace is strong enough to suit his style. “He’s a proven performer at this level,” she said. “The faster they go, the better he’ll like it.” Japan’s Satono Reve, another intriguing contender in the City Of York Stakes, adds an international dimension to the race. The colt’s class over shorter trips could make him a dangerous outsider, while Godolphin’s Notable Speech, a proven miler, will carry top weight. Doyle’s assessment suggests the race is wide open, with Zavateri’s recent form the key factor.

Doyle also highlighted the Yorkshire Oaks, where Kalpana’s gutsy display at Royal Ascot hinted at further progress. “She showed real heart there,” Doyle noted. “A repeat of that would make her a serious contender.” The Juddmonte International, another Group One highlight, has thrown up surprises, with Doyle’s comments suggesting the race remains unpredictable. “You never quite know with these big races,” she said. “That’s what makes them so exciting.”

York’s supporting cast and Chester’s undercard

Beyond the Ebor and the Group One features, York’s card includes the Yorkshire Oaks, where Kalpana’s gutsy display at Royal Ascot hinted at further progress. The Juddmonte International, another Group One highlight, has thrown up surprises, with Doyle’s comments suggesting the race remains unpredictable. At Chester, where the action continues, the programme offers additional opportunities for emerging talent to make an impression.

The Ebor Festival thrives on unpredictability, but Klassleader’s profile has risen after Doyle’s endorsement. His ability to handle York’s undulations and his proven record over the trip make him a horse to follow. With Daiquiri Bay and Love Me Tender also in contention, Saturday’s Ebor could deliver a thrilling finish. “It’s a tough race,” Doyle admitted. “But Klassleader has the tools to win.” As the Knavesmire prepares for another day of top-class racing, the spotlight will be on the horses who can rise to the occasion. Doyle’s faith in Klassleader is a compelling narrative, but the Ebor’s handicap nature means no horse is safe. One thing is certain: York’s final day will not disappoint.
