England’s Campbell smashes Commonwealth Games record as she dances to gold

England’s sprinter Dina Asher-Smith may have claimed the headlines in Glasgow this week, but it was her teammate Daryll Neita who delivered the performance that will echo through athletics for years to come. Neita, the 27-year-old from Leytonstone, set a British record in the women’s 100 metres on Thursday evening, clocking 10.78 seconds to erase the previous mark of 10.85 set by Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah in 2022. The time, achieved with a headwind of -0.3 m/s, places Neita among the fastest British women in history and sends a clear signal ahead of next year’s World Championships.

A record rewritten in real time

The final in Hampden Park was electric from the gun. Neita, wearing the familiar England vest, exploded out of the blocks and never relinquished the lead. Her split times—3.12 at 30 metres and 6.41 at 60 metres—were blistering, and by the 80-metre mark she had opened up a metre on the field. Fellow Briton Imani-Lara Lansiquot took silver in 10.92, while Nigeria’s Favour Ofili claimed bronze in 10.98. But the focus remained on Neita, whose finish line celebration—arms aloft, hips swaying—mirrored the rhythm of her stride. The time flashed up on the stadium screen: 10.78. The old record, once thought untouchable, had been erased.

Why this matters now

Neita’s run arrives at a pivotal moment for British sprinting. After a decade in which Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce dominated the global stage, Neita’s record signals a generational shift. Her time also edges her into the top 10 fastest women of all time, a list previously dominated by Jamaican and American athletes. With the World Championships in Budapest just 11 months away, coaches and selectors will now scrutinise every detail: her reaction time (0.132 seconds), her stride length, and her ability to replicate this speed under pressure. The question is no longer whether she can challenge for gold, but when.

For England, the ripple effects extend beyond the track. Neita’s victory comes a day after Asher-Smith won the 200 metres in a tactical masterclass, and follows a week where British athletes claimed six golds in seven finals. The depth of talent is undeniable, but Neita’s record is the kind of moment that transforms momentum into legacy. It’s not just about medals; it’s about redefining what’s possible.

The tactical edge behind the sprint

Neita’s coach, John Smith, has long emphasised consistency over heroics. Her start technique—measured, explosive, and free of false steps—has improved markedly this season. In Glasgow, she reduced her reaction time by 0.01 seconds compared to her semi-final, a margin that often separates first and fourth. Her stride pattern, meanwhile, shows a rare blend of frequency and length, allowing her to maintain velocity through the final 20 metres when others fade. Against Lansiquot, whose strength lies in the middle 50 metres, Neita’s early lead proved decisive. The tactical lesson is clear: in sprinting, the first 60 metres are the new battleground.

Neita’s biomechanics were particularly telling. High-speed footage from the race shows her ground contact time at 0.089 seconds in the first 10 metres—faster than Thompson-Herah’s 2022 mark of 0.092—while her flight time of 0.112 seconds indicates an optimal balance between power and recovery. These numbers, tracked by British Athletics’ performance analysis team, suggest Neita is maximising every watt of energy, a critical factor in a race where the difference between first and fourth can be just 0.05 seconds.

A platform for the future

The Commonwealth Games stage has often been a springboard for British athletes. Christine Ohuruogu’s 2006 victory in Melbourne preceded her Olympic gold two years later; Adam Gemili’s 2014 win in Glasgow foreshadowed his World Championship silver in 2017. Neita’s record suggests she’s on a similar trajectory. Already a double European champion, she has the technical refinement and competitive edge to target the podium in Budapest and beyond. The question now is whether she can channel this performance into a championship final, where the margins are measured in hundredths.

For now, Neita’s focus is on savouring the moment. The gold medal around her neck is a tangible reward, but the record is the statement that will outlast the celebrations. In a sport where history is written in fractions, she has just rewritten a line of it—permanently.
