Enzo Fernandez transfer news: Manchester City to make late move for Chelsea midfielder – Paper Talk – Sky Sports

Manchester City are preparing to make a late summer statement by targeting Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández, according to multiple reports on Wednesday. The move would represent the biggest Premier League transfer of the summer if completed, with City expected to return to the negotiating table after their initial approach was rebuffed. The development comes as Chelsea prepare contingency plans, including a potential return to Bournemouth for Alex Scott, underlining the fluid nature of the final days of the transfer window.

Why City are circling again

City’s interest in Fernández has resurfaced after their first attempt stalled, with The Telegraph reporting that Pep Guardiola’s side are now poised to make a fresh push. The club’s hierarchy views the midfielder as a long-term solution in midfield, capable of adding creativity and control to a squad already reshaped this summer. Their renewed focus follows reports that Chelsea are preparing to explore alternatives, including a £65 million package for Aston Villa’s Nicolas Jackson, as they balance ambition with financial constraints.

Chelsea’s willingness to consider replacements has intensified after Ollie Watkins signalled his desire to join Al Hilal, with Villa now weighing up a £12 million annual salary to secure the striker’s services. The Blues’ flexibility in midfield has also been highlighted by their reported interest in Real Madrid’s squad options, though no specific names have been confirmed. Meanwhile, Manchester United’s struggles have kept them in the market, with their pursuit of Lewis Hall edging closer after the left-back rejected a return to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s balancing act

Chelsea’s transfer strategy has shifted from aggressive spending to pragmatic restructuring, with reports suggesting they are open to offers for key assets. Villa’s £65 million bid for Jackson, though yet to be accepted, demonstrates the Blues’ willingness to recoup funds where necessary. Their search for a midfield successor to Fernández has already led them back to Bournemouth for Scott, a player they previously signed on loan, as they look to cover all bases before the deadline.

The club’s focus on replacements extends beyond England, with reports linking them to Real Madrid’s squad, though no concrete names have emerged. Their approach mirrors City’s own late push, as both clubs navigate a congested market where value and wage demands often clash. Chelsea’s need to balance ambition with financial prudence has been underlined by their willingness to entertain offers for established players, a sign of the pressure they face in rebuilding under new ownership.

What comes next

The coming days will determine whether City can force through a deal for Fernández, with Chelsea’s need for midfield depth potentially weakening their resolve. The Telegraph‘s report that City are “expected to go back in” suggests they believe a breakthrough is possible, even at this late stage. Meanwhile, Villa’s pursuit of Jackson and Leverkusen’s Christian Kofane shows how the market’s ripple effects are being felt across Europe, with clubs scrambling to fill gaps before the window slams shut.

City’s potential move also raises questions about their long-term plans, particularly after their reported interest in Chelsea winger Pedro Neto, who features on their radar for wing options. The club’s dual-track approach—pursuing both established stars and emerging talent—reflects their desire to maintain competitiveness across multiple fronts. With the season just days away, the final hours of the window will test the resolve of all parties involved.

For Chelsea, the challenge is twofold: replace Fernández without weakening their squad further, and do so without conceding too much ground in negotiations. City, meanwhile, face the task of convincing Fernández that a move to Manchester represents the best path forward. The stakes could not be higher, with both clubs aware that a late deal could shape their campaigns for years to come.

As the window hurtles toward its conclusion, one thing is clear: the pursuit of Enzo Fernández has become the defining storyline of this transfer period. Whether it ends in a blockbuster deal or another deadlock remains to be seen, but the implications for both clubs are undeniable.
