Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City opener was startlingly bad – The Guardian

Enzo Maresca’s first competitive game in charge of Manchester City ended in a 2–1 defeat to Chelsea in the Community Shield, a result that exposed the fragility beneath the club’s polished exterior. The defeat was not just a loss of silverware; it was a statement that City’s transition under Maresca is already under scrutiny before the Premier League curtain rises. With Rodri’s impending departure to Barcelona and a transfer market that has City selling their world-class midfielder, the club’s identity is at a crossroads.

The game that set the tone

Chelsea’s 2–1 win at Wembley was built on moments of individual quality and tactical discipline. Cole Palmer, who tormented City’s defence with his movement and composure, scored twice—first with a low drive after a quick break, then with a composed finish from the edge of the box. City’s response came from Erling Haaland, who pulled one back with a header, but it was too late to salvage the Shield. The defeat was City’s first in the competition since 2011, and the manner of it—especially in the absence of Rodri, who was sold to Barcelona for up to £65m—raised immediate questions about Maresca’s readiness to replace a player who defined an era.

Rodri’s exit, finalised just days before the match, means City are now without their Ballon d’Or-winning midfield general. His influence under Pep Guardiola was unparalleled; a metronome in possession, a destroyer in defence, and the architect of their Champions League triumph in Istanbul. Manchester City’s daily news roundup has tracked the club’s preparations for life without him, but the Community Shield offered no reassurance that Maresca’s side can replicate the control Rodri provided. Instead, City looked disjointed, their midfield overrun at times by Chelsea’s pressing, and their transitions from defence to attack stuttering.

What comes next for City

City’s transfer strategy now hinges on two high-risk moves: the £85m signing of teenage midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and a potential £120m bid for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández. The latter remains unresolved, with Chelsea insisting their deadline for offers must be respected, while City explore every avenue to soften the blow of Rodri’s exit. Bouaddi, an 18-year-old prodigy, could provide a long-term solution, but his integration into a first team that has just lost its most important player will be fraught with challenges.

The club’s willingness to gamble on unproven talent and unsettled stars reflects the urgency of their situation. City’s squad is still packed with world-class performers—Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva—but the midfield void left by Rodri is not easily filled. Maresca’s first real test will come in the league, where City begin their title defence against Brighton on 17 August. A poor start could force City’s hand in the transfer market, with reports suggesting they may return to the market for Fernández even after missing Chelsea’s deadline.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s transfer activity has taken a different path. The club is resisting Galatasaray’s advances for Bruno Fernandes, while also edging closer to signing Lewis Hall from Chelsea. United’s own rebuilding project under their new head coach search—reportedly considering former Hearts manager Eva Olid—highlights the contrast between the two Manchester clubs. Where United are piecing together a squad, City are dismantling theirs.

Tactical reset required

Maresca’s approach against Chelsea relied on a high press and quick transitions, but City’s midfield struggled to regain possession once lost. Palmer’s goals exposed gaps between the lines, and City’s full-backs were pinned back by Chelsea’s wingers. The absence of Rodri was felt in every phase; his ability to shield the defence and dictate tempo is irreplaceable in the short term. Maresca will need to find a way to balance aggression with control, or risk seeing City’s title defence derailed before it begins.

The Community Shield defeat is not the end of the world, but it is a warning. City’s next fixtures—including trips to Liverpool and Arsenal—will demand immediate improvement. The club’s hierarchy, including manager and sporting director, must act decisively in the transfer market to avoid a repeat of the chaos that followed Fernandinho’s departure years ago.

Conclusion: A season of transition

City’s defeat to Chelsea was a microcosm of the challenges ahead. Rodri’s legacy is secure, but his exit has left a void that cannot be filled by a single signing. Maresca’s first game in charge was a reality check: City are no longer the untouchable machine they were under Guardiola. The Premier League is more competitive than ever, and City’s rivals—Arsenal, Liverpool, and now Chelsea—are ready to exploit any weakness.

The coming weeks will determine whether Maresca’s project is built on solid foundations or sinking sand. One thing is certain: City cannot afford another performance like this in the league. The transfer window remains their best chance to steady the ship, but time is running out.
