Europa League draw LIVE: Bournemouth, Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Celtic to learn opponents

Three Premier League clubs and Celtic will discover their Europa League opponents this afternoon as the draw for the league phase gets under way. Bournemouth and Sunderland, who secured their places via sixth and seventh-place finishes last season, will make their European debuts while Crystal Palace, the Conference League champions under Oliver Glasner, return to the competition for the first time since 2016–17. The Eagles, now led by Pierre Sage, will hope to build on last term’s run to the knockout rounds and push deeper into the tournament.

Why this draw matters now

For Bournemouth and Sunderland, the Europa League represents an unfamiliar stage. The Cherries have never played in Europe before, while Sunderland’s last continental outing came in 1973–74. Their debuts arrive amid a wider reshaping of English football’s European hierarchy: Aston Villa’s victory in the 2023–24 Europa Conference League proved that a mid-table Premier League side can still compete for continental silverware, even as the financial constraints of UEFA’s cost-control measures bite. Yet Villa’s own summer has underlined the limits of that success. Despite reaching the Champions League, their squad has been pared back—Martínez, Tielemans and Konsa have all departed—while Tottenham have spent more than £300m in net terms. The contrast sharpens the question: can clubs like Bournemouth and Sunderland, with far smaller budgets, sustain a campaign deep into the Europa League without risking long-term instability?

Crystal Palace’s route is different. Their Conference League triumph last season earned them a place in the Europa League proper, but the competition’s structure has changed. The league phase now features 36 teams split into twelve four-team groups, with the top eight in each group advancing directly to the round of 16. Palace will need to navigate fixtures against established European heavyweights such as Juventus, AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen, as well as Olympiacos and Real Sociedad. Sage’s side showed resilience in last season’s knockout rounds, but the step up in quality is stark. Their opening matches will reveal whether their pragmatic approach can translate against teams built to punish mistakes.

What comes next for the Premier League’s contenders

The Europa League’s league phase will run from September to January, with knockout ties in February. The knockout play-offs are scheduled for 18 and 25 February 2027, followed by the round of 16 on 11 and 18 March, quarter-finals on 8 and 15 April, and semi-finals on 29 April and 6 May. The final, in Frankfurt on 26 May 2027, arrives just days after the Premier League season ends. For clubs with ambitions in both domestic and European competitions, the scheduling demands will be intense. Bournemouth and Sunderland, in particular, will need to balance squad rotation with consistency if they are to avoid the fatigue that often derails first-time European campaigns.

Villa’s experience offers a cautionary tale. Their Europa League triumph last season masked a summer of financial caution: net spend over the past five years totals just £3m, the second-lowest in the Premier League. The sale of Martínez for £7.5m to Chelsea, coupled with the potential departure of Ollie Watkins, underscores the fragility of a squad built on tight margins. Meanwhile, Tottenham’s splurge—net £140m after sales—has bought short-term optimism, even if their opening defeat to Brentford exposed the risks of overhauling a squad mid-season. The Europa League will test whether Villa’s model of sustainability can coexist with ambition, or whether Spurs’ high-wire spending can deliver the consistency required to compete on multiple fronts.

Tactical outlook: can the underdogs compete?

Bournemouth and Sunderland will enter the competition with compact, direct styles designed to exploit set-pieces and transitions. Gary O’Neil and Tony Mowbray have built sides that prioritise defensive solidity and quick counters, but Europe’s elite will punish any lapses in concentration. Crystal Palace, by contrast, may adopt a more structured approach under Sage, mirroring Glasner’s pragmatic tenure. Their ability to press in waves and absorb pressure could be decisive against technically superior opponents.

The presence of Juventus, AC Milan and Leverkusen in the draw means Palace cannot afford to rely on home advantage alone. The Bundesliga duo, in particular, will arrive with squads built for sustained European campaigns, while Olympiacos and Real Sociedad offer physical, aggressive alternatives. For the Premier League trio, the early fixtures will be as much about learning curves as results. Bournemouth and Sunderland will need to treat the league phase as a proving ground, while Palace can aim higher—provided they avoid the early exits that have blighted English campaigns in recent years.

As the draw unfolds, the focus will shift to fixture scheduling and squad fitness. TNT Sports 1 and HBO Max will carry the broadcast, with coverage beginning at 12pm and the draw expected to start around 12.30pm. The stakes are clear: for Bournemouth and Sunderland, it’s about gaining experience; for Palace, it’s about building on last season’s momentum. Villa’s Champions League return will overshadow much of the build-up, but the Europa League remains the proving ground for clubs aiming to bridge the gap between ambition and sustainability.
