Everton’s summer signings under Moyes: Stability or stagnation?

David Moyes’s second full season at Everton has arrived with a familiar contradiction: cautious optimism in the boardroom and a creeping sense of déjà vu on the pitch. The Toffees’ summer recruitment reads like a ledger of modest pragmatism—no blockbuster arrivals, no headline-grabbing departures, just the quiet consolidation of a squad that flirted with Europe before collapsing in spring. Whether this strategy amounts to stability or stagnation will be decided long before the January window, because Everton’s recent form suggests the club is still one bad run from sliding back into the mire.

Recruitment without fanfare

Everton’s summer business has been defined by incremental upgrades rather than seismic shifts. The club’s hierarchy has prioritised continuity, banking on a core of players who showed promise last term—Coleman’s absence notwithstanding—while attempting to address glaring weaknesses in attack and defence. The focus on “modest but sensible” recruitment, as framed by Guardian Football’s 2026-27 preview, reflects a club wary of repeating the chaos that preceded Moyes’s return. Yet the absence of a marquee signing up front—where Beto and Thierno Barry remain the primary options—risks leaving the team short of the cutting edge needed to sustain a push for European places.

The right-back saga drags on, too, with Everton still searching for a successor to Séamus Coleman, a figure whose influence extended beyond the pitch. The search has become “their very own Odyssey,” per the same preview, a metaphor that underscores the frustration of a club unable to solve a problem that has festered for years. Central defence, another area of concern, has seen only piecemeal additions, leaving questions over whether the backline can cope with the physical demands of a congested Premier League schedule.

A spring collapse that lingers

The turning point arrived on 21 March, when Everton sat three points off the Champions League places after dismantling Chelsea in their finest performance at the club’s new stadium. From that high-water mark, the Toffees won just one more game all season, finishing 13th—identical to their position under Sean Dyche the year before, albeit with a single extra point and a worse goal difference. The narrative of “progress” now requires more than just a change in narrative; it demands proof that Moyes’s side can handle the psychological toll of competing at the top end of the table without buckling under pressure.

European football may have been an ambitious target for a club adjusting to a new home and the loss of 10 players to contract expiry, but the opportunity was there to be seized. Instead, Everton’s late-season stutter exposed familiar frailties: a lack of cutting edge in attack, defensive lapses under pressure, and an inability to grind out results when results mattered most. The collapse was not just statistical; it was visceral, a reminder that a mid-table finish is no longer a badge of progress but a warning sign of complacency.

Off-field shadows and financial weight

Everton’s on-pitch struggles are compounded by the lingering fallout from Farhad Moshiri’s ownership. The club was ordered to pay nearly £40m in compensation to Burnley over the 2021-22 relegation, a verdict Everton are appealing alongside the largest financial penalty ever handed to a Premier League club. The legal and financial cloud over Goodison’s successor has done little to inspire confidence, and the club’s ability to compete in the transfer market—already constrained—could be further hamstrung by ongoing sanctions. Stability, it turns out, is not just about squad composition; it’s about the environment in which that squad operates.

Tactical snapshot: front-foot football with caveats

Moyes’s Everton have shown flashes of front-footed football, particularly in their 3-1 dismantling of Chelsea, a performance built on quick transitions and high pressing. Yet the system’s effectiveness is undermined by personnel limitations. The midfield, once a relative strength, now looks thin after the departures of key figures, while the lack of a genuine goal threat up front forces opponents into deeper blocks. The manager’s preference for a three-at-the-back system offers defensive solidity but demands technical midfielders capable of progressing the ball—something Everton have struggled to provide consistently.

The arrival of younger players with Premier League experience may help, but their development cannot mask the absence of a proven Premier League striker. Thierno Barry’s pre-season form offers a glimmer, but one promising performance does not a solution make. Until Everton address the void left by Coleman and find a reliable right-back, Moyes’s tactical flexibility will remain constrained by squad constraints.

Everton’s summer signings may have been designed to steady the ship, but the club’s recent history suggests that stability is a fragile thing. A mid-table finish in 2025-26 would not be a disaster, but it would also not be progress. The real test for Moyes—and for the Everton hierarchy—will come when the inevitable setback arrives. If the club’s recruitment strategy is to mean anything more than treading water, it must deliver players who can turn potential into points. Otherwise, the quiet summer will be remembered not as the foundation of a new era, but as the calm before the next storm.
