Fifa insists Gianni Infantino will remain president after crisis meeting

Fifa’s leadership has moved swiftly to quash dissent over Gianni Infantino’s future, confirming the president will remain in office after a crisis meeting in Rabat on Wednesday night. The decision follows days of pressure from European and North American football’s governing bodies, which had demanded a review of Fifa’s governance practices. Instead, Infantino’s position was reinforced by the organisation’s senior executives, who issued a statement reaffirming their backing for the embattled president.

What happened in Rabat

The meeting in Morocco brought together Fifa’s general secretary, Mattias Grafström, and chief legal officer, Emilio García Silvero, alongside senior management board members. According to Fifa’s official statement, the group “reaffirmed their full support” for Infantino, describing him as “the only official elected by the 211 Fifa member associations.” The statement also revealed that Infantino had sent written apologies to both the Fifa council and the 211 member associations for failing to consult them over the abandoned Fifa Forward Enterprise proposal, which would have seen 21% of Fifa’s commercial rights sold to private investors.

The proposal, which critics argued bypassed established consultation processes, became the flashpoint for growing unease among Fifa’s continental confederations. Uefa and Concacaf had both publicly called for a governance review, with Uefa reportedly already searching for a potential challenger to Infantino in the next presidential election. Yet Fifa’s leadership framed the Rabat talks as an opportunity to “strengthen governance” and “restore confidence” in the organisation, insisting that the episode would not derail its preparations for future tournaments.

Why this matters now

The crisis underscores the widening rift between Infantino’s administration and football’s traditional power centres in Europe and North America. Uefa’s push for a review signals that Infantino’s authority is no longer unchallenged, even as Fifa’s leadership insists the matter is settled. The abandoned World Cup sell-off proposal—publicly abandoned after widespread backlash—exposed vulnerabilities in Fifa’s decision-making structures, particularly the lack of prior consultation with its member associations.

Infantino’s immediate response—issuing written apologies and pledging to improve internal processes—suggests an attempt to mollify critics without conceding substantive change. Yet the fact that he will travel to Colombia on Thursday to attend the inauguration of President Abelardo de la Espriella in Cali indicates he is not retreating from his public duties. Fifa’s statement framed the episode as a chance to “prepare for major events and challenges ahead in a united and transparent manner,” a line that reads as both defensive and aspirational.

What comes next

Fifa’s leadership has drawn a line under the controversy, but the fallout is unlikely to dissipate quickly. Uefa’s ongoing search for a candidate to challenge Infantino in the next election suggests the European body is prepared to escalate its opposition, potentially forcing a contested vote. Meanwhile, Infantino’s insistence on continuing his duties—including international travel—signals he remains defiant, despite the erosion of trust among key confederations.

The organisation’s statement also hinted at internal adjustments, noting that “processes, communications and interactions” between Infantino, Grafström, and the management board “can and should always be continuously improved.” Such language, while vague, implies at least a rhetorical commitment to reform—though whether this translates into meaningful consultation with member associations remains to be seen.

For now, Fifa’s hierarchy has closed ranks, but the episode has laid bare the fragility of its governance model. The next move rests with Uefa and Concacaf, whose willingness to challenge Infantino directly could determine whether this crisis marks a turning point—or merely a temporary setback for a president who has repeatedly defied expectations.
