FIFA vs UEFA: Infantino accuses governing body of smear campaign

FIFA has escalated its confrontation with UEFA by accusing the European body of orchestrating a coordinated “smear campaign” against Gianni Infantino, in response to legal challenges over the aborted attempt to sell part of the World Cup rights to private investors. The escalation marks a new phase in a bitter power struggle that pits football’s two most influential governing bodies against each other, with both sides now pursuing parallel legal strategies in American courts and Swiss jurisdictions.

Legal manoeuvres expose deeper governance fissures

UEFA has filed legal cases in the United States seeking evidence related to the controversial $20bn World Cup subsidiary plan, while also warning it may initiate criminal proceedings in Switzerland, where FIFA is headquartered. FIFA’s response, lodged in a New York court, dismisses UEFA’s actions as “little more than press releases” designed to support a “smear campaign” against Infantino and the organisation he leads. The filing argues that UEFA’s applications are fundamentally flawed because it seeks discovery in aid of a foreign criminal proceeding that does not yet exist and over which it has no authority to initiate.

Central to the dispute is FIFA’s insistence that the World Cup rights venture was merely a proposal that required approval from member associations and its ruling council. FIFA claims UEFA acted out of self-interest, aiming to protect its own competitions by preventing smaller nations from gaining financial strength that could erode UEFA’s market dominance. The legal documents contend that rather than engage in FIFA’s democratic process, UEFA launched a “weeks-long smear campaign” beginning with a press release.

Power struggle turns personal and institutional

UEFA’s tactics extend beyond legal challenges. The European body has signalled it is prepared to pursue criminal proceedings against Infantino in Switzerland, while also exploring avenues to force his resignation either through internal pressure or at FIFA’s presidential election scheduled for March. Yet UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin has publicly distanced himself from any personal bid for the FIFA presidency, stating he will not run but reiterating calls for Infantino to step down. The contradiction underscores a strategic dilemma: UEFA seeks to weaken Infantino’s position without creating a viable alternative at the helm of world football.

FIFA’s legal filing further alleges that UEFA’s motivation is economic, warning that stronger football in developing regions would increase global competition and diminish UEFA’s market power. The claim reflects a long-standing tension between Europe’s financial dominance and FIFA’s stated ambition to redistribute wealth across the global game. Infantino’s senior adviser, Carlos Cordeiro, previously described the World Cup rights plan as a “bad deal” for football when he resigned, adding another layer of internal dissent within FIFA’s leadership.

Football’s governance at a crossroads

The escalation comes after reports revealed that FIFA had planned to receive up to $4.2bn from private investors as early as October, a timeline that FIFA now describes as premature and contingent on approvals that never materialised. The episode has exposed fault lines not only between the two governing bodies but also within FIFA itself, where internal opposition to Infantino’s leadership appears to be coalescing around the controversial financial venture. Meanwhile, UEFA’s legal strategy risks backfiring if courts dismiss its applications as premature or procedurally unsound, potentially emboldening Infantino’s position rather than weakening it.

As both organisations manoeuvre through overlapping legal and political arenas, the episode raises serious questions about the stability of football’s governance. The absence of a clear procedural path for resolving inter-governing body disputes has allowed this conflict to metastasise into a multi-front war involving courts, press statements, and institutional credibility. With FIFA’s presidential election looming, the stakes extend beyond legal technicalities to the very legitimacy of football’s leadership.

For now, both sides remain locked in a high-stakes confrontation that shows no sign of abating. FIFA’s accusation of a smear campaign is not merely rhetorical; it signals a willingness to fight in the courts what it perceives as an orchestrated campaign to undermine its authority. Whether UEFA’s legal strategy succeeds or collapses under scrutiny may determine not only Infantino’s future but the balance of power in world football for years to come.
