Footballer, 19, among four dead in horror crash as club pay tribute

Djedy Sidibe, a 19-year-old footballer and volunteer, died in a head-on collision between the car he was travelling in and a lorry on the N-122 near Borja, Spain, on Monday 17 August. Four young people aged 18 to 21 were killed in the crash; a fifth occupant remains in hospital with serious injuries. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through amateur football in Aragón and raised urgent questions about road safety during the late-summer return of volunteers from summer camps.

How the crash unfolded and who was involved

The five young people had spent the weekend at a YMCA summer camp in Salduero before driving back to Zaragoza. According to local reports, their car collided with a lorry on the N-122 in Borja. Police are investigating the exact cause of the collision. The lorry driver and all occupants of a second vehicle emerged without injury; the seriously injured passenger was airlifted to hospital. The ages of the four fatalities were between 18 and 21; Sidibe was 19.

Sidibe played amateur football for Zaragoza Galaxy in Major League Aragón and was studying for a Higher Degree in Chemistry and Environmental Health at IES Río Gállego. He had Malian roots and, after turning 18, had chosen to become a volunteer with the YMCA Leadership Academy, mentoring younger participants through the same programmes he had experienced as a child.

Club and community mourn a “great person”

Zaragoza Galaxy issued a statement on social media describing Sidibe as “not just a player” but “a friend and, above all, a great person.” The club recalled shared laughter and moments that “could always make you smile,” adding that “today football takes a back seat” and that Sidibe “will always have a place in our hearts.” The tribute underscores how Sidibe’s identity extended far beyond the pitch, intertwining sport, study and service.

Tributes have also flowed from teammates and volunteers who travelled with Sidibe to Salduero. The YMCA Leadership Academy confirmed that the group had been returning from a weekend of volunteering when the crash occurred, deepening the sense of loss within organisations that rely on young leaders like Sidibe.

What happens next

Police in Aragón have opened an investigation into the collision, examining factors such as speed, distraction and road conditions. The outcome will be closely watched by families, volunteers and amateur clubs across the region. Zaragoza Galaxy has cancelled scheduled sessions and asked members to respect the family’s privacy while they process the loss.

The accident arrives at a sensitive moment: late August is when many youth volunteers complete summer camps and return home, often driving late at night after long shifts. Organisations are now reviewing travel protocols and considering whether additional safety measures—such as staggered departures or designated drivers—could prevent similar tragedies.

For Sidibe’s teammates, the immediate focus is remembrance. Zaragoza Galaxy has asked fans to honour his memory by supporting the club’s upcoming fixture against Huesca B on Saturday, when a minute’s silence will be observed. The club has also set up a memorial fund in partnership with the YMCA to support young people pursuing education and volunteering in Sidibe’s name.

As Aragón mourns, the crash serves as a stark reminder of how quickly lives can change on the road. Sidibe’s story—footballer, student, volunteer—highlights the fragility of young adulthood and the ripple effects of loss across clubs, classrooms and communities. The investigation will seek answers; the tribute will keep his legacy alive.
