Former FIFA official says organization must rebuild trust – The Japan Times

FIFA’s credibility crisis deepened on Monday after a former senior official publicly urged the organization to overhaul its governance and restore public trust. The call comes amid ongoing scrutiny of FIFA’s decision-making processes and follows years of controversy that have repeatedly overshadowed the world’s most-watched sporting event. With global football still recovering from the fallout of past scandals, the urgency of structural reform has rarely been more apparent.

What triggered the latest criticism?

The former FIFA official, whose identity was not disclosed in the report, highlighted ongoing concerns about transparency and accountability within the organization. While the specific incidents were not detailed in the source, the official’s remarks reflect broader frustration within football’s governing bodies about FIFA’s handling of key governance issues. The call for rebuilding trust signals that internal dissatisfaction has reached a point where external voices are now amplifying demands for change, particularly in areas such as tournament allocations and commercial partnerships.

Why does this matter now?

Trust in FIFA has been eroded over the past decade by a series of corruption scandals, opaque bidding processes, and inconsistent enforcement of regulations. The intervention arrives at a pivotal moment, as FIFA prepares for upcoming major tournaments where its leadership will face renewed global scrutiny. The official’s comments suggest that without meaningful reform, FIFA risks repeating the same mistakes that have repeatedly damaged its reputation. For football stakeholders—from federations to fans—the call is a reminder that governance issues are not merely historical footnotes but active threats to the sport’s integrity.

What comes next?

While the former official did not outline specific reforms, the demand for structural change points toward potential shifts in FIFA’s leadership or policies. Historically, such pressure has led to leadership transitions or the creation of independent oversight bodies. However, without concrete proposals or institutional backing, the impact of this statement remains uncertain. FIFA’s response—or lack thereof—will determine whether the criticism sparks real accountability or fades into the background of football’s endless cycle of controversy. For now, the organization faces a choice: double down on opacity or begin the difficult process of rebuilding credibility from within.

One thing is clear: football cannot afford another cycle of scandal. The former official’s warning is not just a critique of the past but a challenge to FIFA’s future. Whether the organization heeds that challenge will define its legacy for years to come. The stakes are higher than ever, with the world’s attention fixed on FIFA’s next moves—and the consequences for the sport as a whole.
