Fulham chaos: Arbeloa sent off as Malaga steal penalty in empty net

Fulham’s pre-season campaign has been a litany of setbacks, but Wednesday’s chaotic friendly against Málaga at Estadio La Rosaleda crossed into farce. What began as a routine warm-up fixture ended with manager Álvaro Arbeloa sent off, his players walking off the pitch, and Málaga scoring a penalty into an empty net. The episode exposed the brittleness of Fulham’s preparations and raised fresh questions about their readiness for the Premier League opener against Chelsea on 24 August.

A friendly turned into a fiasco

The match itself had already swung twice before stoppage time. Ryan Sessegnon equalised for Fulham after Chupe put Málaga ahead in the first half, then Alex Iwobi restored Fulham’s lead in the 57th minute. But in the 90th, Calvin Bassey’s handball conceded a penalty, and Eneko Jauregi levelled to make it 2-2. That should have been the end—except it wasn’t.

Arbeloa, sent off for remonstrating with the referee at full-time, led his players straight down the tunnel, convinced the game was over. Málaga, however, expected a penalty shootout to decide the Costa del Sol Trophy. With Fulham’s bench empty and the tunnel doors shut, Jauregi placed the ball on the spot and slotted it into an unguarded net. The striker celebrated with the home fans, while Arbeloa’s side never returned.

Contradictory accounts deepen the confusion

Fulham insist both clubs agreed in advance that no shootout would follow a draw. “We can confirm that prior to the match, both teams agreed that there would not be a penalty shootout in the event of a draw,” the club wrote on X. Málaga’s official website offered a starkly different version: “Although a penalty shootout had been scheduled, Fulham left the pitch, claiming that a shootout had not been included in the contract.”

The breakdown in communication underscores the fragility of Fulham’s pre-season schedule. With just one win from five friendlies, their rhythm has been erratic. Their next test comes on Saturday against Stuttgart at Craven Cottage, a match that now carries added scrutiny after Wednesday’s collapse. Arbeloa’s side must regroup quickly before facing Chelsea in their Premier League curtain-raiser.

Managerial instability overshadows squad overhaul

Arbeloa’s appointment in June followed Marco Silva’s departure, and his early tenure has been defined by turbulence. Reports suggest he is targeting Real Madrid youngsters Alejandro García and Daniel Mastantuono to bolster his squad, moves that could reshape Fulham’s identity before the transfer window slams shut. Yet the Málaga farce suggests the club’s infrastructure—from contract clarity to matchday protocols—lags behind Arbeloa’s ambition. Fulham’s reported pursuit of García and Mastantuono hints at a rebuild in progress, but Wednesday’s chaos raises doubts over whether the foundations are stable enough to support it.

Arbeloa’s own red card—his first as a manager—compounds the sense of disarray. His reaction to the final whistle reflected the tension simmering within the club. Whether the disagreement over the shootout was a miscommunication or a misstep, the fallout has overshadowed any positives from the match.

Fulham’s Premier League return looms, and the malaise extends beyond the pitch. The club’s transfer activity, including ongoing talks over a Southampton midfielder, will be dissected under a microscope after Wednesday’s shambles. Arbeloa’s ability to steady the ship before 24 August may determine whether this pre-season farce is a footnote—or the first sign of a deeper crisis.
