Fulham vs Chelsea LIVE: Enzo Fernandez benched as Xabi Alonso kicks off tenure as Blues manager

Xabi Alonso’s Premier League managerial debut arrives in the most unforgiving of settings: a west London derby at Craven Cottage, where his Chelsea side face a Fulham side now led by former Real Madrid right-back Álvaro Arbeloa. The stakes are immediate. Chelsea, fresh from a 10th-place finish and without European distractions, need a statement of intent; Fulham, in the post-Marco Silva era, must avoid regression. Both dugouts bristle with new faces, but only one will leave satisfied.

New eras, familiar stakes

Alonso’s Chelsea have spent heavily this summer, with Morgan Rogers’ £117m arrival the headline. The Blues’ opening-day XI—featuring Reece James, Romeo Lavia and Joao Pedro—reflects Alonso’s blend of experience (Jordan Henderson, Danny Welbeck) and youth. Yet the absence of Enzo Fernández, Moisés Caicedo and Wesley Fofana underscores the squad’s ongoing reshaping. Arbeloa, meanwhile, inherits a Fulham side that has hovered between 10th and 13th since promotion, their mid-table security now his to defend—or improve.

For Chelsea, the lack of European football is a double-edged sword. While rivals tire in continental campaigns, the Blues can focus solely on domestic consolidation. Alonso’s challenge is clear: arrest the decline that saw them finish behind Aston Villa and Tottenham last season. Fulham, meanwhile, must prove Arbeloa’s appointment isn’t a lateral move after Silva’s four-year tenure. Europe, last reached in 2011-12, is the bare minimum.

What the lineups reveal

Chelsea’s confirmed XI—Sánchez; Gusto, Lacroix, Colwill, Acheampong; James, Hato, Lavia; Palmer, Rogers, Joao Pedro—signals Alonso’s preference for control in midfield and width from Pedro and Palmer. The inclusion of £117m man Rogers underscores his faith in the new recruit, while the bench features Welbeck and Henderson, both still acclimatising. Arbeloa’s Fulham, meanwhile, fields a side built for resilience: Leno; Castagne, Cuenca, Bassey, Robinson; Berge, King; Iwobi, Palacios, Gonzalo, Bobb. The absence of Kevin Muniz and Smith Rowe from the bench hints at Arbeloa’s cautious start.

Notably, Fofana travelled despite suspension, a technicality that hints at Chelsea’s squad depth issues. The Blues’ defensive frailties last season—exposed in transitions and set-pieces—remain a concern, while Fulham’s backline, anchored by Bassey and Cuenca, will look to frustrate.

The tactical chessboard

Alonso’s Chelsea will likely prioritise positional play, with Lavia and Hato tasked to shield Colwill and Lacroix. James’ overlapping runs could stretch Fulham’s back five, while Palmer’s directness offers a counter to Arbeloa’s pragmatic approach. The Brazilian’s new contract—until 2032—suggests Alonso sees him as a long-term focal point, a decision that could pay dividends if the teenager delivers.

Arbeloa, meanwhile, may deploy a mid-block, forcing Chelsea into wide areas where Gusto and Acheampong can exploit. Fulham’s wingers, Iwobi and Palacios, will need to track James and Gusto defensively, while Bobb’s pace could unsettle Chelsea’s high line. The visitors’ lack of a recognised striker—Joao Pedro is a false nine—may force them into deeper positions, inviting Fulham’s press.

This tactical battle is as much about mentality as method. Chelsea’s recent instability contrasts with Fulham’s steady, if unspectacular, recent form. Arbeloa’s Real Madrid pedigree suggests a disciplined setup, while Alonso’s reputation for clarity could shine in a high-pressure debut.

For both managers, the result matters more than the performance. Chelsea need to prove they’re more than a squad of parts; Fulham must show they can compete with the elite. A draw would suit neither, but in a league where margins are paper-thin, even a point could define the early narrative.

As the clock ticks toward 8pm, the question isn’t just who will win, but which manager’s vision will prevail. Alonso’s Chelsea carry the weight of expectation; Arbeloa’s Fulham bear the burden of proof. The first chapter of this new era begins now.
