Guimaraes fails to turn up at Newcastle training camp as planned

Bruno Guimarães’ absence from Newcastle United’s pre-season training camp in La Manga on Sunday night has cast a shadow over the club’s preparations for a season of transition. The Brazil international, who was due to join his team-mates at the Spanish base, did not arrive as scheduled, though Newcastle insist he remains on his way and is expected to rejoin the squad imminently. The delay comes at a pivotal moment for the Magpies, with a new managerial era under Matthias Jaissle set to begin and Arsenal circling for the club captain.

What happened in La Manga?

Guimarães was due to meet Newcastle’s squad in La Manga on Sunday evening, but the 27-year-old failed to appear as planned. Sky Sports News understands the midfielder is still en route to Spain and is expected to arrive in the coming hours. Newcastle have struck a relaxed tone about the situation, suggesting the delay is procedural rather than a sign of a breakdown in talks. The club’s stance contrasts with the urgency of the transfer window, where every day counts.

Guimarães informed Newcastle last month that he wished to join Arsenal if the Gunners made an acceptable offer. The Brazilian, who has two years left on his contract with a club-held option for an additional year, remains Newcastle’s captain, but his future now hinges on whether Arsenal can meet the club’s valuation. Newcastle have yet to receive a formal approach from Arsenal, despite reports to the contrary, leaving the club puzzled by the lack of direct contact.

A new era begins under Jaissle

Matthias Jaissle, set to be unveiled as Newcastle’s new manager tomorrow, is already in La Manga with the squad, preparing for his first week in charge. The German’s arrival marks the end of Eddie Howe’s tenure and the start of a fresh project at St James’ Park. Jaissle’s immediate challenge will be to steady the ship amid the uncertainty surrounding Guimarães, a player he will need to integrate—or replace—before the transfer window slams shut.

The situation at Newcastle is fluid in more ways than one. Amanda Staveley, the club’s former owner, is reportedly in talks to acquire a stake in West Ham, a move that could further complicate Newcastle’s off-field dynamics as reported here. With Jaissle’s appointment still not officially confirmed, the club is navigating a period of upheaval both on and off the pitch.

Newcastle’s summer rebuild continues

Amid the Guimarães saga, Newcastle have completed a £25.7 million deal for Braga goalkeeper Lukas Horníček, their fifth summer signing. The Czech international, 24, arrives on a five-year contract after Newcastle activated his release clause, and is set to start the season as the Magpies’ first-choice goalkeeper. Horníček’s arrival addresses a long-standing need in the squad, where defensive frailties were exposed last term.

Newcastle conceded 55 goals in the Premier League last season, the fifth-worst record in the division, and Horníček’s shot-stopping and distribution will be crucial in Jaissle’s system. The goalkeeper kept seven clean sheets during Braga’s Europa League semi-final run last season, the most of any keeper in the competition, and ranked second for successful passes (846) and fourth for passing accuracy (75%) among Portuguese top-flight goalkeepers. Ross Wilson, Newcastle’s sporting director, hailed Horníček’s “remarkable progress” and described him as “one of Europe’s top young goalkeepers.”

Guimarães’ delayed arrival and Jaissle’s imminent arrival underscore the volatility of Newcastle’s summer. The club’s next moves—whether Guimarães departs, Horníček settles in, or Jaissle reshapes the squad—will define the early stages of a season that already feels like a crossroads. One thing is certain: the Magpies cannot afford further distractions if they are to compete in a Premier League that shows no sign of easing up.
