Hearts 4-0 Dundee United: Wouter Vrancken finally off the mark as Hearts boss as new boys shine in thrashing – Sky Sports

Wouter Vrancken’s wait is over. After five winless games in charge, the Hearts manager finally secured his first competitive victory as boss on Saturday, and he did so in emphatic fashion. A 4-0 demolition of Dundee United at Tynecastle was as emphatic as it was unexpected, with the Edinburgh side dominating from the first whistle to the last. For Vrancken, the result is more than just three points—it’s a statement of intent as Hearts look to climb clear of the early-season turbulence that has dogged his tenure so far.

Oli Duku opened the scoring in the 18th minute, finishing low past United goalkeeper Adam Montgomery after a quick counter-attack. Duku, who had struggled for minutes since his summer arrival, now looks like the player Hearts paid £1.5m to sign. The second came from a set-piece routine in the 34th minute, with Andy Halliday rising unmarked to power a header past Montgomery from six yards. Hearts doubled their lead before half-time, and the rout was on.

In the 56th minute, Duku completed his brace, slotting home after a mazy run from Ben Woodburn, who had drifted inside from the left flank. Woodburn’s movement stretched United’s defence to breaking point, and Duku was the beneficiary. The fourth arrived in the 72nd minute, when Lawrence Shankland—on loan from Sunderland—tapped in after a goalmouth scramble following a Hearts corner.

A statement of intent for Vrancken

The scoreline flattered Dundee United, who were outplayed in every phase of the game. Hearts controlled possession, pressed aggressively, and punished United’s defensive lapses with clinical finishing. The victory ends a frustrating run of results that had seen Vrancken’s side pick up just two points from five league games, leaving them in the bottom half of the table. Now, with a performance that suggested a team finally firing on all cylinders, the Belgian manager can breathe easier.

For Hearts, the win is particularly timely. With the Europa Conference League qualifiers scheduled to begin in late August, a strong domestic showing is essential to build momentum. Vrancken’s side have shown flashes of quality this season, but consistency has been the missing piece. Saturday’s display—complete with a composed first-half display and a ruthless second period—suggests that piece may now be falling into place.

United’s struggles deepen

Dundee United, meanwhile, leave Tynecastle with more questions than answers. Their defensive frailties were exposed repeatedly, and their inability to contain Hearts’ midfield dominance cost them dearly. The visitors had little to offer in attack, struggling to create clear chances and looking disjointed in possession. The 4-0 scoreline does not reflect a competitive match—it was a one-sided contest from start to finish.

For United, the result is another setback in what has been a difficult start to the season. Their struggles have been well-documented, and Saturday’s performance did little to dispel concerns about their defensive structure or attacking creativity. With the pressure mounting, their next few fixtures—including a trip to Ibrox—will be crucial in determining whether they can steady the ship.

What comes next?

For Hearts, the challenge now is to build on this performance. Vrancken will be keen to see his side carry this intensity into their next match, particularly with European football on the horizon. The Europa Conference League qualifiers represent a chance to test their mettle against stronger opposition, and a positive run could provide the platform for a sustained push up the table.

United, on the other hand, must regroup quickly. Their next fixture will be a stern test, and they cannot afford another performance as toothless as this one. The early-season jitters have already cost them dearly, and if they are to avoid slipping further into the pack, a tactical reset may be necessary.

One thing is clear: Hearts are back on track. Whether this is the start of something more sustained remains to be seen, but for now, Vrancken and his players can savour a performance that finally does justice to their potential. United, meanwhile, must confront the reality of their struggles and act decisively to prevent their season from spiralling further out of control.
