Hearts brush aside Dundee United in return to winning ways

Hearts ended a three-match winless run in emphatic fashion on Saturday, brushing aside Dundee United 3-0 at Tynecastle to signal a return to winning ways in the Scottish Premiership. The victory, secured without conceding a shot on target, underlined Steven Naismith’s side’s resilience and provided a timely lift ahead of a congested fixture list. The match statistics reflected Hearts’ dominance: they enjoyed 63% possession, registered 18 shots (10 on target), and saw three of their attempts hit the woodwork. United, meanwhile, managed just two shots on target from 11 attempts, with their highest xG (expected goals) of the game coming from a 25-yard effort in the 41st minute that drifted wide.

A statement of intent

The home side dominated from the outset, with United rarely threatening in open play. Hearts controlled possession in the opening exchanges, probing with purpose while United’s midfield struggled to impose themselves. The deadlock was broken in the 22nd minute when Hearts broke sharply from a United corner, with Lawrence Shankland pouncing on a loose ball in the box after Andy Halliday had forced a save from Benjamin Siegrist. United’s defence, unsettled by the early pressure, failed to clear decisively, and the rebound fell to Michael Smith who made no mistake from close range.

United’s best chance of the half arrived late, when a speculative effort from distance drifted wide. Hearts, meanwhile, doubled their lead just before the break through a clinical finish from open play, with Shankland converting after Halliday had threaded a through-ball into the box. The second half saw Hearts maintain their composure, with United’s attacks lacking cohesion. A third goal arrived midway through the second period, when Smith capitalised on another defensive error to slot home, sealing the win and sending the home crowd into raptures.

Why it matters now

For Hearts, the result could not have come at a better time. A three-game winless streak had seen them slip to mid-table, while United arrived at Tynecastle in desperate need of points to avoid the drop zone. The victory moves Hearts level on points with the teams above them, while United remain mired in the bottom three. Naismith’s side now face a pivotal run of fixtures, including a crunch clash with title rivals, and Saturday’s performance suggests they are ready to compete.

The win also serves as a psychological boost for Hearts’ supporters, who have endured a frustrating spell of inconsistency. The clean sheet, in particular, will reassure a defence that has leaked goals in recent weeks—United’s attack managed just 0.12 xG in the match, their lowest of the season against top-half opposition. United, meanwhile, will reflect on a missed opportunity to close the gap on safety, with their attack failing to test Zach Sargent in a rare Hearts save opportunity.

What comes next

Hearts will look to build on this result when they travel to face a side pushing for European qualification. A positive outcome would further tighten the race for the top six, while United must regroup quickly to avoid slipping deeper into trouble. For Naismith, the challenge now is to maintain this level of performance against stronger opposition, while United’s focus must shift to shoring up their defensive shape—particularly in wide areas, where they conceded 12 crosses in the first half alone.

The Tynecastle faithful will hope this victory marks the start of a resurgence, with the next fixtures offering a chance to rediscover the form that once saw them challenge for the title. For now, though, Hearts can savour a rare moment of clarity in a season of turbulence. As Naismith put it after the match: “We knew we had to start winning games, and this is the kind of performance we need to build on.”
