Hearts humbled by Benfica as Hibs secure vital win; Motherwell held in Helsinki

Scottish clubs endured contrasting nights in European competition on Thursday, as Hearts were dismantled in Lisbon while Hibs and Motherwell claimed vital away results.

Hearts’ Europa League hopes extinguished in Lisbon

Hearts arrived in Lisbon with their Europa League ambitions already hanging by a thread, and Benfica made swift work of ending them. Marco Silva’s side struck inside three minutes through Ángel Di María, who capitalised on a defensive miscommunication between Hearts centre-backs, and added three more before half-time, leaving the Jambos shell-shocked and with little hope of overturning the deficit at Tynecastle. A 6-1 scoreline left Hearts staring at a likely Conference League play-off against Rapid Vienna, who lead Paide 4-1 after the first leg in Estonia.

The result marked a fourth consecutive defeat under new head coach Wouter Vrancken, deepening the gloom around a club that had already lost the Premiership title to Celtic in May. With 1,300 supporters in attendance, the Edinburgh side offered little resistance to a Benfica side on course for a Champions League play-off tie against the winners of Aarhus and Sabah Baku.

Hibs take commanding lead to North Macedonia

Hibernian, by contrast, left Skopje with a slender but crucial advantage after a nervy 2-1 win over Shkendija. Owen Elding put Hibs ahead in the 73rd minute, sweeping in from close range after a goalmouth scramble, but Marko Gjorgjievski equalised within three minutes, forcing Warren O’Hora to scramble home a 90th-minute winner from Jordan Obita’s corner. The victory sets up a winnable second leg in North Macedonia, where Hibs will aim to secure a place in the Conference League play-off round.

The result continues Hibs’ steady progress under manager Jack Ross, who has steadied the ship after a turbulent summer. A place in the play-offs would offer a rare European foothold in a season where domestic form remains the priority.

Motherwell held in Helsinki but claim valuable point

Motherwell left Finland with a share of the spoils after a 1-1 draw at HJK Helsinki, extending Alfred Johansson’s impressive start to life in Lanarkshire. The Swede, who has won three of his first four matches in charge, saw his side take the lead through Liam Grimshaw in the 22nd minute, before HJK equalised through Lucas Lingman in the 68th, ensuring both teams head into next week’s second leg level on aggregate.

The draw keeps Motherwell’s European campaign alive, though they will need to improve on Thursday’s performance if they are to progress. Johansson’s side have shown resilience this summer, but the real test lies ahead in the return fixture.

A night of contrasts for Scottish football

Thursday’s results underlined the gulf between Scotland’s top sides and Europe’s heavyweights. Hearts’ capitulation was a brutal reminder of the challenges facing clubs outside the continent’s elite, while Hibs and Motherwell salvaged something from their trips. For Hearts, the focus now shifts to salvaging pride in the Conference League, while Hibs and Motherwell can approach their second legs with cautious optimism.

The contrasting fortunes serve as a reminder that European nights in Scotland are often defined by narrow margins—except when the opposition is Benfica.
