Highlights: Aberdeen score twice after ninety minutes to beat Hearts

Aberdeen’s late surge against Hearts on Saturday night transformed a dour stalemate into a dramatic victory, as the Dons struck twice in the final minutes to claim all three points at Pittodrie. The 2-0 scoreline flattered Hearts in the end, but Aberdeen’s composure under pressure ensured they left with a result that keeps their Premiership hopes alive.

Aberdeen’s late rally shifts the balance

The match had looked set for a goalless draw until the 87th minute, when Aberdeen broke through. A Hearts clearance from a corner fell to midfielder Dylan McGovern, whose low cross was turned in by striker Duk at the back post. Hearts barely had time to regroup before the Dons struck again in the 90th minute, doubling their advantage through Leigh Kavanagh, who capitalised on a defensive miscommunication to slot home. The timing of the goals—both arriving in the final three minutes—left Hearts shell-shocked and Aberdeen celebrating a result that could prove pivotal in the race for European spots.

Hearts’ frustration mounts in Gorgie

Hearts had started brightly, probing Aberdeen’s defence in the opening exchanges, but their inability to convert early chances proved costly. Their best opportunity came in the 12th minute when Lawrence Shankland‘s header narrowly drifted wide, and they dominated possession in the first half without creating clear-cut chances. The late collapse will raise fresh questions about their resilience in tight games, particularly as they chase a top-six finish. For Aberdeen, the win offers a rare lift after a patchy run of form, though the manner of victory—two goals in three minutes—will do little to ease concerns about their consistency.

What comes next for both sides

Aberdeen’s next challenge comes against Rangers, currently sitting in the top four, a test that will reveal whether this performance was a one-off or the start of a resurgence. Hearts, meanwhile, must regroup quickly as they prepare for a crunch clash against Celtic that could define their season’s trajectory. Both teams will hope this result serves as a springboard, but for Hearts, the manner of defeat will linger longer than the final score.

The tactical battle saw Aberdeen prioritise direct play in the second half, bypassing midfield to exploit the channels. Hearts, meanwhile, struggled to transition from defence to attack, often caught high up the pitch after losing possession. Aberdeen’s second goal stemmed from a quick counter, exploiting the space left by Hearts’ advancing full-backs Barrie McKay and Jamie Brandon. While neither side produced a masterclass, Aberdeen’s ruthlessness in the dying embers proved the difference.

Aberdeen’s victory keeps them within touching distance of the top six, but their patchy form means they cannot afford another stutter. Hearts, meanwhile, will reflect on missed chances and defensive lapses that cost them dearly. For the Dons, the win is a statement of intent—albeit a late one. For Hearts, it’s another lesson in the fine margins that separate success from disappointment.
