How Liverpool, Man Utd and Arsenal owners’ net worths compare – with one trailing behind

As the Premier League’s summer transfer window tightens, the financial firepower of the division’s heavyweights is under fresh scrutiny. Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal have all flexed their spending muscles in recent weeks, but the net worth of their owners tells a different story—one where the hierarchy of wealth is not as straightforward as the league table might suggest.

Arsenal’s Kroenke towers above the rest

Stan Kroenke’s financial dominance is absolute. The Arsenal owner’s net worth has surged to $24.3bn (£17.82bn) as of the Forbes Real-Time Billionaires List published on 15 July 2025, since he became the club’s sole shareholder in 2018. That figure places him 12th among the world’s richest sports club owners, a ranking bolstered by his sprawling portfolio of franchises in the NBA, NFL and beyond. His Los Angeles Rams claimed the Super Bowl in 2021, while his real estate holdings stretch from shopping plazas to vast ranches across North America. Kroenke’s wife, Ann Walton Kroenke, inherits the Walmart fortune, further embedding the family’s financial fortress. For Arsenal, such resources translate into sustained investment—most recently in Julian Alvarez, whose contract announcement signals the Gunners’ intent to finalise further deals before Tuesday’s deadline.

United’s Ratcliffe lags behind, despite recent takeover

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ownership of Manchester United arrived with fanfare in late 2023, yet his net worth of $18.2bn (£15.92bn) as of the Forbes Real-Time Billionaires List published on 15 July 2025 still trails Kroenke’s by a significant margin. The British billionaire’s fortune, largely derived from the INEOS chemicals empire, has dipped from a 2023 peak of $22.9bn, reflecting broader market pressures. United’s summer business has been pragmatic rather than extravagant, with midfield reinforcements like Carlos Baleba arriving for up to £70m from Brighton. The club’s focus now shifts to shoring up other areas, including a left-back to replace the ageing Luke Shaw, whose future at Old Trafford appears increasingly uncertain. Ratcliffe’s financial clout may not match Kroenke’s, but his willingness to invest suggests United’s spending power is far from depleted.

Liverpool’s Bezos-backed consortium adds a twist

Liverpool’s ownership structure has evolved beyond the Fenway Sports Group model, with a consortium involving Jeff Bezos injecting fresh capital behind the scenes. The investment, first reported by the Mirror Football in June 2025, is structured as a minority stake in the club’s commercial operations rather than direct equity. While the club’s transfer activity has been headline-grabbing—most notably the £106m capture of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain—their spending has been tempered by shrewd negotiation. Barcola’s deal, reportedly £22m cheaper than PSG’s initial valuation, underscores Liverpool’s ability to secure value amid a crowded market. The Reds’ summer has also seen them poach Victor Munoz from Newcastle, hinting at a broader strategy to exploit rival clubs’ vulnerabilities. With Anfield’s transfer business still in flux, the Bezos-linked investment could yet unlock further moves before Tuesday’s deadline.

The contrast in owner wealth is more than a curiosity; it shapes how each club navigates the transfer market. Kroenke’s resources allow Arsenal to act decisively, whether in retaining Alvarez or pursuing other targets. Ratcliffe’s INEOS-backed United, while financially robust, faces the challenge of rebuilding a squad on a tighter budget. Liverpool, meanwhile, combine traditional FSG prudence with new financial muscle, enabling them to compete for elite talent without overpaying. As the window slams shut, the financial gap between these clubs may not close, but their transfer strategies will continue to reflect the realities of their owners’ fortunes.
