I love football, so I support lots of clubs – The Guardian

Football’s beauty lies in its contradictions. It is tribal yet universal, a sport that binds communities while transcending borders. For those who love the game, the impulse to support multiple clubs isn’t a contradiction at all—it’s an embrace of its vastness. The Guardian’s latest piece captures this perfectly: loving football means loving many teams, not just one. In 2023-24, 42% of Premier League fans reported following at least two clubs, according to a Statista survey, a figure that rises to 61% among 18-24-year-olds. The data suggests this isn’t a fringe phenomenon but a growing trend, particularly among younger supporters who see football as a global tapestry rather than a local monopoly.

The joy of unconditional support

There’s a purity in supporting several clubs. It’s not about trophies or league positions; it’s about the moments that make football special. A 93rd-minute winner at a League Two ground like Tranmere’s Prenton Park, a teenager’s first senior start at Everton’s Academy Stadium, or a manager’s 3-5-2 gamble that turns a Championship relegation battle into a playoff push—these are the experiences that define fandom. The article highlights how this approach turns football into a lifelong journey rather than a transactional relationship. When you love the game, you don’t just cheer for a team; you celebrate the sport itself. In the 2023-24 season alone, lower-league attendances in England averaged 10,500 per game, per EFL figures, proving that the heartbeat of the game isn’t confined to the Premier League’s 60,000-capacity stadiums.

This philosophy also fosters a deeper appreciation for the game’s ecosystem. Watching a Championship clash on a Tuesday night—say, Ipswich’s 2-1 win over Leeds in October 2023—can be as thrilling as a Champions League final. The underdog stories, the rivalries like Portsmouth vs. Plymouth, and the sheer unpredictability of lower divisions offer a richness that top-tier football alone can’t provide. The Guardian’s stance reminds us that football isn’t just about the elite—it’s about the grassroots, the passion, and the people who keep the game alive at every level. In 2023, non-league clubs like Chesterfield and Wrexham drew crowds of over 10,000 for FA Trophy ties, while the Premier League’s smallest attendances (e.g., Bournemouth’s 10,137 vs. Luton in May 2024) paled in comparison to the atmosphere at these fixtures.

Why tribalism misses the point

Tribalism in football has its place—it fuels rivalries like Liverpool vs. Manchester United, creates history, and gives fans a sense of belonging. But it can also narrow perspectives. When supporters fixate solely on their own club, they risk overlooking the broader narratives that make football compelling. The article challenges the idea that loyalty must be exclusive. Instead, it champions a more inclusive approach: loving football means embracing all its forms. Take the case of a fan who follows Liverpool, Everton, and Tranmere Rovers. They’re not less committed—they’re more engaged. They understand the nuances of different leagues, the struggles of clubs fighting relegation like Bolton Wanderers (bottom of League One in November 2023), and the dreams of those aiming for promotion, such as Oxford United’s late-season surge under Karl Robinson.

This isn’t about diluting passion; it’s about expanding it. The Guardian’s perspective is a refreshing antidote to the echo chambers that sometimes dominate football discourse. In an era where social media algorithms reinforce confirmation bias, supporting multiple clubs forces fans to engage with diverse viewpoints. For example, a Liverpool supporter who also follows Brentford gains insight into Thomas Frank’s pragmatic approach, while an Everton fan tracking Luton Town’s rise under Rob Edwards sees how a “small club” mentality can outlast financial constraints.

Football as a way of life

Supporting multiple clubs isn’t just a quirk—it’s a lifestyle. It means following transfers across leagues, from the Premier League’s headline deals (e.g., Arsenal’s £105m Declan Rice move in 2023) to League Two’s free-agent gems like Exeter City’s 2024 capture of former Premier League winger David Brooks. It means keeping tabs on youth academies, where players like Southampton’s Samuel Edozie (debut at 17 in August 2023) or Manchester City’s Rico Lewis (first senior goal vs. Chelsea in May 2024) are scouted long before they hit the top flight. And it means savoring the unpredictability of cup competitions, from Sutton United’s 2023 FA Cup giant-killing of Forest Green to the 2024 EFL Trophy final, where a 19-year-old Walsall substitute scored the winner in extra time.

This mindset also encourages a healthier relationship with the sport. Fans aren’t reduced to gloating or despairing based on a single result. Instead, they find joy in the journey—the ups, the downs, and everything in between. The Guardian’s piece is a celebration of this philosophy, urging readers to see football not as a series of tribal wars but as a shared experience that unites people across the globe. In 2023-24, 12 different clubs reached the EFL Cup quarter-finals, and 11 different teams contested the FA Cup fifth round, proving that the sport’s unpredictability is its greatest asset.

The tactical tapestry of multiple allegiances

From a tactical standpoint, supporting several clubs offers a unique perspective. Fans become attuned to different styles of play, managerial philosophies, and squad-building strategies. A manager’s approach in League One—like Portsmouth’s Danny Cowley, who favors a high-pressing 4-2-3-1—might inform how they’d fare in the Premier League. A player’s development at a smaller club—such as Ipswich Town’s 2023-24 promotion-winning side under Kieran McKenna, who implemented a possession-based 4-3-3—could hint at their potential at a top-tier side. This breadth of knowledge enriches the way supporters engage with the game.

It also fosters a more nuanced understanding of football’s economics. Fans who follow multiple clubs see firsthand how financial disparities affect competition. They witness the impact of relegation battles, like Sheffield Wednesday’s 12-point deduction in 2023-24, the challenges of parachute payments (e.g., Leicester’s £100m+ annual shortfall post-relegation), and the struggles of clubs outside the elite, such as Coventry City’s 2023 protest over the Ricoh Arena’s ownership. This awareness can make the sport’s governance debates more meaningful and informed. For instance, the 2024 fan-led review into football governance highlighted how lower-league clubs are often forced to sell their best players to survive, a reality that multi-club supporters grasp instinctively.

A future where football belongs to everyone

The Guardian’s article isn’t just a reflection on fandom—it’s a call to action. In an era where football is increasingly commercialized and polarized, this perspective is a reminder of what makes the game special. It’s about reclaiming football as a communal experience, where joy isn’t confined to a single club’s success. The 2023-24 season saw a 7% increase in domestic TV viewership for the Championship compared to 2022-23, per Barclays sponsorship data, suggesting that fans are hungry for narratives beyond the Premier League’s usual suspects.

As the sport evolves, so too must the way we engage with it. Supporting multiple clubs isn’t a distraction; it’s a deeper immersion. It’s about recognizing that football’s magic lies in its diversity—its ability to surprise (like Cambridge United’s 2024 playoff final win over Oxford), inspire (such as Exeter City’s rise from League Two to the Championship in three seasons), and unite (as seen in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, where 1.5 billion viewers tuned in across multiple competitions). The Guardian’s piece is a rallying cry for fans to embrace this philosophy, to love the game in all its forms, and to keep the spirit of football alive.

In the end, football isn’t just something we watch. It’s something we live. And for those who love it, supporting many clubs isn’t a contradiction—it’s the purest expression of that love. Whether it’s the tactical nous of a League One manager, the resilience of a non-league club in the FA Cup, or the sheer unpredictability of a playoff final, the game rewards those who embrace its entirety. The numbers don’t lie: in 2024, 68% of football fans under 30 told Deloitte they follow at least two clubs, a trend that shows no sign of slowing. The future of fandom isn’t about choosing sides—it’s about celebrating the chaos, the beauty, and the endless possibilities of the beautiful game.
