‘I negotiated Man Utd transfer – they paid more than double what we expected’

Manchester United’s transfer business has long been scrutinised for its opacity, but one deal from a decade ago still stands out—not for its headline-grabbing price tag, but for how it exposed the club’s willingness to overpay. In 2014, Southampton sold Luke Shaw to United for £30 million, a figure that stunned even the Saints’ own hierarchy. Former Southampton vice-chairman Les Reed, who negotiated the deal, revealed this week that the fee was more than double what the club had anticipated, a windfall that remains their most lucrative academy sale to date.

How Southampton turned a £15m expectation into £30m

Reed’s account of the negotiations, shared on the Fozcast podcast, underscores how United’s desperation to land Shaw skewed the market. After meeting with then-United executive Ed Woodward, Reed returned to Southampton’s offices and found his finance director and chief executive already speculating on the fee. The finance director guessed £12 million; the CEO upped it to £15 million. Reed’s response—”Nah, you’re both wrong. £30m”—was met with stunned silence. The deal, which made Shaw the world’s most expensive teenager at the time, was finalised just days later.

For Southampton, the windfall was transformative. Reed’s eight-year tenure at the club saw him oversee sales that brought in nearly £250 million, including deals for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sadio Mané, and Virgil van Dijk. Shaw’s departure, though, remains the crown jewel—a single transfer that redefined the club’s financial trajectory. United, meanwhile, secured a left-back who would go on to become a cornerstone of their defence and a key figure for England.

United’s summer pivot: from big names to calculated gambles

Fast-forward to 2026, and United’s transfer strategy has shifted. The club’s recent activity reflects a more pragmatic approach, with a focus on shrewd acquisitions rather than headline-grabbing splashes. The arrivals of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Cristian Orozco—alongside the £38 million recouped from Rasmus Hojlund’s sale to Napoli—signal a squad overhaul that prioritises depth over star power. Departures like Casemiro and Jadon Sancho have freed up funds, but the club’s next move could define their season.

Jhon Lucumí is the name on everyone’s lips. The Colombian defender, coveted by Juventus and Chelsea, is the subject of a £21 million valuation from Bologna. United are among the clubs “capable” of meeting the asking price, according to Corriere di Bologna, with the defender’s insistence on joining a “big club” aligning perfectly with Old Trafford’s ambitions. The 28-year-old’s 100-plus Serie A appearances and World Cup pedigree add weight to his profile, though his age and price tag may deter rivals.

United’s pursuit of Lucumí follows the collapse of their £60 million bid for Lewis Hall, a deal that stalled after Newcastle United refused to sell. The failed attempt to land Hall—reportedly rejected outright by the Magpies—highlights the challenges United face in a transfer market where competition is fierce and patience is thin. With less than two weeks until their Premier League opener, the clock is ticking.

The bigger picture: Carrick’s rebuild and the road ahead

Michael Carrick’s summer signings have been met with cautious optimism. The additions of Tielemans and Santos, alongside the loan arrival of Radek Vitek, suggest a squad being rebuilt with an eye on balance. Yet the missing piece—a centre-back of Lucumí’s calibre—could be the difference between mid-table mediocrity and a push for European spots. United’s transfer activity this summer, while less extravagant than in past years, carries the weight of necessity.

Reed’s revelation about the Shaw deal serves as a reminder of United’s past excesses, but also their capacity to turn a profit when the stars align. Today, the club’s focus is on sustainable growth. Whether Lucumí becomes the next Shaw—a bargain in hindsight—or another missed opportunity remains to be seen. What is clear is that Carrick’s summer window will be judged not by the names he signs, but by the gaps he fills.

With the Premier League curtain set to rise in under a fortnight, United’s transfer story is far from over. The next chapter could be written in the next 14 days—or left to be told in the months that follow.
