Infantino sorry for errors but stays Fifa president

Gianni Infantino will remain Fifa president after senior executives backed him in a crisis meeting in Rabat on Wednesday, despite his admission of “errors” in a controversial private investment plan that triggered a wave of criticism from within world football’s governing body.

The Fifa president convened the management board at the organisation’s Africa office following the collapse of his proposal to sell minority stakes in competitions—including the men’s and women’s World Cups—to private investors through a new subsidiary, Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE). The plan, which offered member associations $40 million each in exchange for support, was exposed by The Times on 28 July and swiftly condemned by Uefa as a “shabby, back room, opaque deal.” Uefa’s executive committee issued a statement on 31 July stating it had “lost confidence” in Infantino’s leadership, intensifying pressure on the Fifa president to step back.

In a joint statement issued four hours after the meeting, Fifa’s secretary general Mattias Grafström and the management board “reaffirmed their full support” for Infantino, despite Grafström having described the episode in an internal memo as “a sad and reproachable series of events.” The two were later photographed together at a Women’s Africa Cup of Nations match in Rabat, signalling an attempt to present a united front.

How the plan unravelled

Infantino’s proposal centred on FFE, a vehicle intended to generate private capital for Fifa’s tournaments by selling stakes in future editions of the men’s and women’s World Cups. The pitch included a $40 million inducement for each of Fifa’s 211 member associations if they backed the plan, a move critics argued bypassed established governance processes and prioritised financial expedience over transparency.

The scheme unraveled after The Times revealed details of the plan, prompting swift condemnation from Uefa and internal dissent. Fifa later acknowledged that “mistakes” were made in how the proposal was handled, conceding that “it was not the intention for the Fifa council and member associations to feel excluded from the process and that the process should have been handled differently.” The governing body also accepted that errors occurred after the leak, including in its subsequent response, with Fifa admitting that its handling of the fallout “should have been handled differently.”

Fifa denied a Times report that Infantino had promised Morocco the 2030 World Cup final in exchange for its backing, though the organisation did not address the substance of the FFE proposal beyond acknowledging procedural flaws. The denial came after The Times reported on 30 July that Infantino had privately assured Moroccan officials of the final’s location as part of a broader effort to secure support for the FFE plan.

What comes next for Fifa

With Infantino’s position secured for now, the focus shifts to damage control and restoring confidence in Fifa’s governance. The governing body struck a defiant tone in its post-meeting statement, declaring it “will no longer tolerate any attacks on its integrity, good governance and due process and will take all necessary measures to protect and safeguard its name and reputation.” The statement, released late on Wednesday, framed the episode as an isolated misstep rather than a systemic failure, a framing that Grafström’s internal memo directly contradicted.

Yet the episode has exposed deep fissures within Fifa’s leadership. Grafström’s internal memo—sent to staff the day before the Rabat meeting—highlighted the gravity of the crisis, calling the sequence of events “sad and reproachable.” The fact that such criticism emerged from within the organisation, rather than solely from external stakeholders, underscores the sensitivity of the issue. The memo, obtained by Inside World Football, was distributed to Fifa staff on 31 July and described the FFE proposal as “a betrayal of the principles that should guide our organisation.”

Infantino and Grafström followed up with a signed letter to Fifa’s vice-presidents, council and 211 member associations, in which they “sincerely apologise” for their errors and “commit to them not happening again.” The conciliatory tone contrasts with the combative language in Fifa’s public statement, suggesting an attempt to balance accountability with reassurance. The letter, dated 4 September and seen by the BBC, also pledged to “restore trust through concrete actions,” though it did not outline specific reforms.

Tactical missteps and political fallout

The FFE proposal represented a high-risk strategy that misjudged the political landscape at Fifa. By tying financial incentives directly to a contentious plan, Infantino risked alienating member associations that might have otherwise supported the underlying goal of revenue diversification. The decision to frame the offer as a quid pro quo—$40 million for backing—amplified perceptions of opacity and undermined the legitimacy of the process. The plan’s collapse also exposed the fragility of Infantino’s alliances, particularly with Uefa, whose leadership had already signalled its disapproval.

The timing of the leak, just days before the proposal was set to be formally presented, ensured maximum damage. Fifa’s belated acknowledgment of procedural errors came too late to prevent the erosion of trust among key stakeholders, including Uefa, which had already declared it had “lost confidence” in Infantino’s leadership. The leak, published on 28 July, forced Fifa into a reactive posture, with the governing body’s initial response focusing on dismissing the Times report rather than addressing the substance of the criticism.

While Infantino retains the backing of Fifa’s executive, the episode has laid bare the fragility of his authority. The dual messaging—public defiance alongside private contrition—reflects an organisation struggling to reconcile financial ambition with governance expectations. For Fifa, the path forward requires more than damage control; it demands a credible commitment to transparency that goes beyond the immediate crisis. The real test will be whether the promised reforms materialise—or whether the next controversy is already in motion.
