Inter Milan sign Jones from Liverpool

Inter Milan have completed the £30m (€35m) signing of Curtis Jones from Liverpool, ending a 16-year association with the Reds and marking the third English international to join Simone Inzaghi’s side this summer.

Why Jones’ exit matters now

Jones’ departure arrives as Liverpool face mounting pressure to reshape their squad under Andoni Iraola. The midfielder, who had one year left on his contract, leaves Anfield after 228 appearances and 22 goals across all competitions. His exit follows a season in which he featured 49 times but managed only 18 Premier League starts, struggling to secure a regular role under Arne Slot.

Liverpool’s pursuit of wide reinforcements has overshadowed Jones’ transfer. The Reds’ £60m bid for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh was rebuffed this week, with Brighton holding firm on their valuation. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s attempts to sign Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola have stalled, with PSG demanding a fee far beyond the £145m mark.

The Inter Milan calculation

Inter’s move for Jones reflects their ambition to strengthen midfield depth ahead of a congested fixture calendar. The deal includes a 10% sell-on clause and sees Jones join John Stones and Djed Spence as the latest English recruits at the club. The fee—£25.7m guaranteed with £4.28m in add-ons—exceeds Liverpool’s earlier valuation, which they had set around £35m before negotiations intensified.

Jones’ arrival adds technical quality to a squad already bolstered by Stones’ defensive presence. His ability to play in multiple midfield roles offers Inzaghi flexibility, particularly as Inter target a deep Champions League run. The timing of the deal, finalised just days before the transfer window closes, underscores Inter’s urgency to secure reinforcements.

What’s next for both clubs

For Liverpool, Jones’ exit leaves Iraola with a midfield reshuffle to manage. Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, and Ryan Gravenberch shared minutes last season, but the departure of a squad player like Jones may force Iraola to accelerate the development of academy prospect Trey Nyoni. Liverpool’s wider transfer strategy remains unclear, with their focus on wide players still unresolved.

Inter, meanwhile, will now turn their attention to other targets. While Jones’ arrival addresses one area, the club’s need for a creative midfielder or a defensive upgrade may persist. The window’s final hours could yet bring further movement, with reports suggesting Manchester United are exploring options for Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde.

Jones’ move is a pragmatic one for both parties: Liverpool recoup a fee for a player out of favour, while Inter gain a proven Premier League performer at a price that reflects his reduced status at Anfield. The deal’s structure—a mix of guaranteed and conditional payments—suggests Inter are confident in Jones’ role, even if his path to regular starts is not guaranteed.

As the window slams shut, the focus shifts to how both clubs adapt. For Liverpool, the challenge is clear: replace Jones’ experience without derailing their wider rebuild. For Inter, the question is whether Jones can justify a fee that, while not extravagant, still represents a significant outlay in a competitive Serie A season.
