Is Jackson underrated? Could Emery reunion unlock more from him at Villa?

Nicolas Jackson’s Chelsea exit has opened a new chapter, and Aston Villa’s interest suggests the 24-year-old may yet prove the doubters wrong. The Senegalese striker arrived at Stamford Bridge amid high expectations but left with a reputation as an unreliable finisher, despite his undeniable knack for finding space. Now, with Unai Emery reportedly eyeing a reunion at Villa Park, the question is whether the former Chelsea manager can unlock a more clinical side to Jackson’s game.

Why Jackson’s finishing masks his real value

Jackson’s time at Chelsea was defined by missed chances, but the numbers tell a more nuanced story. Since the start of the decade, factoring in all players with at least 5,000 Premier League minutes and excluding penalties, only Erling Haaland has posted a higher non-penalty expected-goals figure per 90 minutes than Jackson. His ability to manufacture shooting opportunities is elite, yet his conversion rate—18 goals from 61 big chances—paints him as a profligate waste of chances.

This disconnect isn’t unique to Jackson. Brentford owner Matthew Benham, speaking at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, argued that positioning is far more predictive of a striker’s value than finishing. “For a striker, getting in position is way more informative than finishing,” Benham said. “There is an awful amount of randomness in finishing.” Jackson’s knack for occupying dangerous zones suggests his true impact lies in creating, not necessarily converting.

Emery’s Villa project could be Jackson’s reset

Villa’s pursuit of Jackson aligns with Emery’s preference for mobile, pressing forwards who thrive in transitional phases. The Spanish manager’s tenure at Chelsea saw him deploy Jackson as a focal point, but the striker’s struggles under pressure may have stifled his development. At Villa, where Emery has reshaped the squad with high-energy recruits like Morgan Rogers—signed for a club-record £117m from Aston Villa—Jackson could find a system better suited to his strengths.

Villa’s attacking reshuffle has already seen Morgan Rogers arrive in a club-record deal, while defensive overhauls continue with Pep Chavarria’s £16.3m move nearing completion. The left-back’s arrival would bolster Villa’s wing-back system, mirroring the setup that powered Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title under Emery. If Jackson can replicate his Chelsea positioning metrics in a more fluid Villa attack, his finishing may no longer look like a liability.

The transfer window’s ripple effect

Chelsea’s summer overhaul has left Jackson surplus to requirements, with the Blues also nearing deals for Chavarria and Diogo Costa while offloading Trevoh Chalobah for £31m. The club’s £500m-plus valuation on 11 players underscores their willingness to reshape the squad, even if it means parting with talent. For Jackson, Villa’s interest represents more than a fresh start—it’s a chance to prove Benham’s theory right.

Villa’s squad overhaul extends beyond attack. The club’s links to Jackson coincide with defensive departures, including Lucas Digne’s move to PSG, which could free up funds for further reinforcements. Emery’s preference for technical, high-pressing forwards makes Jackson a logical fit, especially if the Senegalese can shed his Chelsea-era label as a missed-chance merchant.

Jackson’s Chelsea exit was framed by missed opportunities, but his underlying numbers suggest a player miscast in a system that demanded instant returns. Emery’s Villa project offers a blueprint for redemption: a high-pressing, transitional setup where Jackson’s positioning—not his finishing—drives his value. If the reunion materialises, it could silence critics by proving that the real story of Jackson’s career hasn’t been written yet.
