It’s time! Championship, League One and League Two opening day LIVE!

Today marks the first meaningful football of the 2024-25 season as the EFL’s three divisions roll into action across a packed Saturday. Championship, League One and League Two open their campaigns with 24 fixtures that will shape promotion, survival and managerial narratives before the Premier League’s curtain-raiser next weekend. While the top flight grabs the headlines, the league below offers early clues about which clubs are ready to challenge and which are already staring down the barrel.

Championship: Three promoted sides face immediate scrutiny

The Championship’s opening day pits newly promoted Ipswich Town, Southampton and Leeds United against long-established rivals in a day that will test whether any of the trio can sustain their Premier League ambitions. Ipswich, returning after a 20-year absence, begin at home to Leeds in a fixture that doubles as a homecoming for Whites boss Daniel Farke, whose Norwich side were denied automatic promotion last May. Southampton, meanwhile, travel to newly relegated Leicester City in a clash that pits two clubs with contrasting trajectories—one chasing an instant return, the other desperate to avoid a second successive drop.

For Leeds, the opening-day fixture carries extra weight: a loss would compound the pressure on Farke after a summer of transfer uncertainty and fan unrest. Ipswich, buoyed by a £100m+ summer budget, will look to impose themselves early, while Southampton’s squad depth—bolstered by Championship-winning manager Ruben Selles—will be under the microscope at the King Power Stadium.

League One: Bolton and Portsmouth set early pace

League One’s curtain-raiser sees Bolton Wanderers host Portsmouth in a six-pointer that could set the tone for the division. Both clubs spent heavily in the close season, with Bolton splashing £10m on midfielder George Hamer and Portsmouth bringing in striker Colby Bishop for a reported £2.5m. The Trotters, managed by Ian Evatt, will hope their direct style unsettles a Pompey side still adjusting to life under new ownership.

Elsewhere, Cambridge United face Exeter City in a match that pits two clubs who flirted with the playoffs last term. Exeter’s resilience under Gary Caldwell will be tested early, while Cambridge’s home advantage could prove decisive in a tight division where every point counts. The early games also offer a chance to assess the impact of new managers: Walsall’s new boss, Liam McAllister, takes charge for the first time against Shrewsbury Town, while Carlisle United begin life under Paul Simpson against Doncaster Rovers.

League Two: Title race contenders and survival battles collide

League Two’s opening day delivers an immediate title-race preview as Stockport County, last season’s runners-up, host Tranmere Rovers in a clash of two clubs with ambitions beyond mid-table. Stockport’s home advantage at Edgeley Park will be crucial, while Tranmere’s experience under Shaun Garnett could prove the difference in a league where consistency is king. Both sides will be keen to avoid the kind of slow starts that derailed their promotion pushes 12 months ago.

The division’s survival narratives also begin here. Harrogate Town, newly relegated from League One, face a daunting trip to Wrexham in a fixture that could define their season before it properly starts. Wrexham, meanwhile, will look to build on their playoff push under Chris Wilder, whose side will be desperate to avoid the kind of early stumbles that cost them last time out. Newport County, another relegated side, begin at home to Sutton United in a match that could set the tone for their survival fight.

Tactical outlook: Transfers and tactics to watch

The opening day offers an early glimpse of how new managers intend to reshape their teams. Farke’s Leeds will likely revert to the high-pressing, positional style that defined his Norwich sides, while Southampton’s Selles may opt for a more pragmatic approach after inheriting a squad built for survival rather than promotion. In League One, Evatt’s Bolton could continue their direct, long-ball approach, while Caldwell’s Exeter may look to control games through possession.

League Two’s smaller budgets mean tactics will be secondary to squad depth and fitness. Wilder’s Wrexham may prioritise quick transitions, while Stockport’s promotion-winning side under Dave Challinor often relied on quick, vertical passes to unlock defences. The early games will reveal which clubs have the personnel to execute their game plans—and which are still piecing things together.

The EFL’s opening day is more than a formality—it’s the first real test of ambition, preparation and resilience. For the promoted sides, it’s a chance to announce their intentions; for the strugglers, it’s a warning of what lies ahead. By Sunday morning, the league tables will tell their own story, but the narratives shaping the season will already be in motion.
