‘It started to have an unhealthy effect on my life!’ | Root on why he gave up Test captaincy in 2022

Joe Root’s decision to step down as England’s Test captain in April 2022 was not a sudden impulse but the culmination of months of mounting pressure, a burden that began to weigh visibly on his performances and well-being. Speaking after England’s series-clinching win over New Zealand at Headingley that summer, Root revealed the personal toll the role had exacted, describing how the relentless demands had started to “have an unhealthy effect on my life.” The admission, delivered in measured tones after a match where his team’s dominance masked the private struggle behind it, underscored a turning point in his leadership journey.

Why the weight became too heavy

The captaincy, Root explained, had evolved from a source of pride into something that eroded his joy for the game. His words carried the weight of someone who had carried England through turbulent years—rebuilding after the Ashes drubbing in Australia, navigating the chaos of Bazball’s infancy, and absorbing the scrutiny that comes with every defeat. The New Zealand series, a 3-0 whitewash, provided a rare moment of respite, but the victory lap was framed by his candid reflection on what had driven him to relinquish the armband months earlier. “It started to have an unhealthy effect on my life,” he said, framing the decision as a necessary act of self-preservation rather than a tactical retreat.

Root’s tenure as captain had been defined by resilience. He took over in 2017 amid a transitional phase, inheriting a side that had just lost 4-0 to India and was grappling with the aftermath of Alastair Cook’s retirement. Over five years, he led England to series wins in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and India, but the role’s demands—constant media obligations, tactical planning, and the emotional labor of captaincy—began to clash with his identity as a player. The New Zealand series, played in the shadow of his resignation announcement, became a final act of defiance: a dominant display that masked the internal conflict.

The moment the burden became visible

The turning point came not in a single match but in the accumulation of moments where the strain showed. Root’s form dipped in 2021, culminating in a run of scores that betrayed the mental fatigue creeping into his game. The 2021-22 Ashes in Australia, where England were outplayed comprehensively, exposed the fractures in a team still searching for cohesion. By the time New Zealand arrived in 2022, Root had already decided to step aside, though he deferred the announcement until after the series to avoid distraction. The Headingley victory, where England’s aggressive approach under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum masked the captaincy transition, provided a clean break—one Root described as liberating.

His departure marked the end of an era. Root’s leadership style—calm, methodical, and steeped in tradition—contrasted sharply with the high-octane, fearless approach that would define the Stokes-McCullum era. Yet his decision to prioritize his well-being over the role’s prestige signaled a shift in how modern cricketers view leadership. The New Zealand series, therefore, was not just a cricketing milestone but a cultural one: the moment when England’s captaincy crisis found resolution, even if the scars of the journey lingered.

The legacy and what comes next

Root’s exit cleared the way for Stokes to take over, a move that would redefine England’s Test identity. Under Stokes and McCullum, the team embraced a radical, attack-first philosophy that Root had helped lay the groundwork for but could not fully embody. His continued presence in the side as a senior batter provided stability during the transition, though the captaincy’s absence allowed him to rediscover the pure joy of playing. The New Zealand series, then, was a bittersweet farewell—a final hurrah for the old guard and the dawn of a new, more audacious chapter.

Looking back, Root’s decision to step down was less about failure and more about self-awareness. He had led England through 64 Tests, winning 27 and losing 26, a record that spoke to his tenacity even amid criticism. Yet the role’s demands had started to “have an unhealthy effect on my life,” a phrase that captured the unspoken pressures of modern captaincy. The New Zealand series, therefore, was not just a cricketing milestone but a cultural reset—one that allowed Root to reclaim his love for the game while paving the way for the next generation.

For England, the aftermath of his resignation would become a defining period. The Stokes-McCullum era would go on to rewrite the team’s narrative, but Root’s contribution remained foundational. His honesty about the personal cost of leadership offered a rare glimpse into the human side of the game, a reminder that even the most resilient figures face limits. The Headingley win, then, was not just a series-clinching moment but a quiet revolution—one where a captain’s greatest act was knowing when to stop.
