José Mourinho marks Real Madrid return with late drama and touch of humility | Sid Lowe

José Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid was always going to be measured in more than just minutes. It would be judged in mood, in method, in the moments that flickered between frustration and relief. And so it proved on a night where the old master, back in the dugout after 4,380 days, found himself sprinting down the touchline not with his bench but behind it, fists clenched, watching as the substitutes erupted into the corner of the RCDE Stadium. The goal that settled the game came from an unexpected source: Yan Diomande, the club’s record signing, had been introduced by Mourinho, and it was the 21-year-old’s presence in the box that turned a scrappy, broken-up move into the decisive finish. Madrid had more chances, Espanyol had moments of resistance, but in the end it was the new striker’s instinct that delivered the points.

A return marked by restraint and late drama

Mourinho arrived in the dugout to a media scrum, photographers abandoning their posts to surround him before a ball was kicked. He had spoken of being calmer now, and perhaps that was evident in his measured start. Madrid began brightly but Espanyol, as Mourinho had warned, showed fight. The visitors created openings, the hosts responded, and the pattern held: promise without resolution, until the 90th minute. That’s when Diomande, lurking in the area, reacted to a loose ball that Kylian Mbappé had failed to control. The Frenchman’s touch sent the ball away from him; Diomande didn’t. He forced it over the line, and Madrid had their winner.

Mourinho’s celebration was telling. While his substitutes sprinted forward, he walked, pulled Valverde aside for a word, and then followed the celebrations at a distance. It wasn’t just relief; it was recognition that solutions, even in victory, are never immediate. The coach had spoken before the game of Espanyol’s quality, and they showed it in patches. Madrid had more chances, but the visitors had succeeded in limiting the visitors’ rhythm. The first game under a new regime rarely offers clarity, and this one was no exception.

What the goal—and the man—reveal

The Diomande strike wasn’t just a goal; it was a statement of intent, albeit one delivered in the 90th minute. The striker, signed from Levante where he had rescued them from relegation last season, has been living at Valdebebas like Mourinho, the two sharing breakfast each morning. Their collaboration, it seems, is already bearing fruit. Whether Diomande’s profile—a traditional No 9 with an aerial presence—is the missing piece Madrid need beyond Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham remains to be seen. But for one night, at least, it worked.

Mourinho’s post-match embrace of Espanyol’s coach Manolo González, his high-fives with the referee, and his quick retreat down the tunnel suggested a man satisfied but not satisfied enough to linger. The game had exposed Madrid’s old flaws: moments of waste, stretches of control without reward. Espanyol, despite the loss, had shown they could trouble the champions. The first day after a managerial change is rarely the last word, but it is often the first glimpse of what comes next.

What comes next: tests, temperament, and the long game

Madrid face sterner tests, and Mourinho will face sterner tests of his own temperament. The victory over Espanyol was a start, but it was a start built on scrappy football and a late surge. The coach has spoken before of the challenges of integrating world-class talent, and this game offered a reminder that even the best players need a system, a role, a moment to shine. Diomande’s goal may have been the headline, but the real story was the structure—or lack of it—before it.

Mourinho’s return is not just about results; it’s about rhythm. The question now is whether he can impose his own, whether Madrid’s stars can adapt to a coach who demands discipline as much as creativity. The Diomande moment was a microcosm: instinct met opportunity, and the result was decisive. But football is not decided in moments; it is decided over time. The next test will come soon enough, and Mourinho will need more than late drama to silence the doubts.

For now, though, the old master has his first win. And Madrid have their points. The rest will follow in due course.
