Kyle Walker made Pep Guardiola cry during heated argument as Man City row emerges

Pep Guardiola’s final two seasons at Manchester City were defined by triumph and turmoil, but a new Prime Video documentary, A Beautiful Obsession, has exposed the fractures beneath the club’s dominance. Among the revelations is a dressing-room confrontation with club captain Kyle Walker that left the manager visibly distressed and accelerated the defender’s exit from the Etihad.

The dressing-room explosion that changed everything

Footage from the documentary shows Walker confronting Guardiola in the Anfield dressing room following City’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in December 2024. The England international, visibly angry, accused the manager of repeatedly citing his name in team meetings. Walker argued that his name came up so often because he was being singled out, not because of his captaincy. He claimed Guardiola had ignored his own role in reacting to teammates’ errors, only to bring his name into discussions. The row was raw, personal, and captured on camera—an extraordinary breach of the usual managerial-player boundaries.

Guardiola’s emotional response and Walker’s swift exit

Guardiola struggled to hold it together as he delivered an impassioned speech in response. “If I am a problem, you have to tell me,” he said. “I won’t stay here for the money or just for the fact of staying. I extended the contract because I want to be with you, I want to fight in that position.” The manager’s plea underscored the depth of his commitment to the club, but the damage was done. Walker played just seven more matches for City—three as captain—before joining AC Milan on loan for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. He later sealed a permanent switch to Burnley last summer. Bernardo Silva was subsequently appointed club captain in the summer of 2025, a decision that formalised the end of Walker’s City tenure.

The broader context: a club under strain

The documentary also lays bare the internal tensions surrounding Guardiola’s decision to make ten changes for City’s Champions League defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in November 2024. Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak described the moment as “one of the lowest points” of Guardiola’s reign, admitting he was too angry to speak to the manager immediately after the 2-0 home loss. “To go and to an entire new team on a game this important… probably one of the lowest points we have had,” Al Mubarak said. “I can’t speak to him, honestly, I am so angry.”

Chief executive Ferran Soriano, a longtime ally of Guardiola’s from their Barcelona days, struck a more measured tone but acknowledged the challenges of managing a figure as complex as the Catalan. “Geniuses are unbalanced people, not only Pep,” Soriano observed. When confronted with the remark, Guardiola agreed, replying, “So I am an unbalanced person? Yeah, I am.”

The tactical fallout and City’s identity crisis

The Walker-Gvardiola feud unfolded during City’s worst run of form under the manager: nine losses in twelve games across the autumn of 2024. The documentary frames this period as a crisis of identity, with Guardiola’s attempts at squad rotation backfiring spectacularly. His admission that he felt “f***ing stupid” after the Leverkusen defeat reveals a rare moment of self-doubt in a career otherwise defined by tactical certainty.

Walker’s departure marked the end of an era. His leadership had been central to City’s culture, but the documentary suggests the club’s hierarchy was prepared to move on. The decision to appoint Silva as captain in 2025 signalled a generational shift, one that aligned with the club’s evolving priorities.

Guardiola’s final two seasons at City were always going to be scrutinised, but A Beautiful Obsession has ensured the focus is not solely on trophies. The documentary exposes the human cost of sustained success—a manager pushed to his limits, a captain sidelined, and a club forced to confront the limits of its own dominance. The fallout from that dressing-room row in Liverpool will resonate far beyond the final whistle.
